A penny for Your Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Just to bring back the distant memories, what is you favourite (or top ten) moments in your DD career?

I'd have to say mine was beating unnlikely alies in the demo for the first time. I was only a level 8, but that apprentice is still with me today :')
(yes it's my favourite character, and not just because he's OP)

My thoughts are worth a lot more than a penny.
But i'll share it with you, my eureka moment was when i was told by the mod that i had to post as though the readers on this forums balls haven't dropped yet.
So if this concerns you, i apologize in advance.
I cant think of another event that has shaped my DD experience for the better.

I remember my first day about a year ago, my boyfriend got me from 1-69 that day and told me I had to get to 70 myself after that. I think it took me like 3 or 4 days because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

Please pardon the lengthy nature of this post. That comment will (maybe) be funny later. Also, note that I typed this before reading any of this thread except the OP. I wanted my thoughts to flow without knowing what others had said. In retrospect, it’s interesting that I mention two of you by name without knowing you’d replied to the thread.

Honorable Mention - My first post on the forums
July 2012. I forget the topic, but it was something about which I had a lot to say. Surprise! I don’t remember anything about it except that TripleTripleTripleH poked fun at it for being too long. :) He was right. But that never stopped me from pontificating at length when I felt like it. And I’m glad I did. This is, has been, and will again be, a terrific community.

Honorable Mention 2 – My first participation in a community event
The first time I ever played DD online with people I don’t know was the Xbox community event in… whatever month that was… where we played the Deeper Well, Raining Ogres. Genuinely afraid that my (nice but underpowered) teammates would struggle, I wiped out all the orges myself for the first three waves before I realized that we weren’t really in any danger.
It landed me and my DPS apprentice (Chthon, who you’ll see referred to several more times below) a spot in the top 5 on the XBLA leaderboards… one that I very much don’t deserve (you get points for all those ogres!). But heck, to be ahead of Cabbage on ANY leaderboard is an honor, whether I deserve it or not. 

Honorable Mention 3 – The people I’ve met on the forums
It’s not my interest to leave anyone out, but I’ve had enjoyable though usually brief conversations with several very interesting people over the months. Specifically, it’s been fun and informative to have the opportunity to talk to Josh/Hitmonchan/iamisom, AKFAN, Headhuntress, Classic22, Anaheim Flash, WilTodd, ChickenDude, and Cabbage. Interesting, cool folks, one and all.

#5 – The first time my family team beat MistyMire on Insane
This one is noteworthy because my younger son, who plays much less, was key. He instinctively aggro’ed an orge away from the central crystal long enough for the rest of the team to take out the Spider Queen, after we’d failed as a team to beat her several times before then.

#4 - The first time my family team beat the Ancient Dragon+
The weekend that insane+ came out, my family team and I settled in for a long weekend of battling. Our goal was to proceed through each level on Insane+ and see how far we could get. We got as far as the Ramparts before we had to adjourn.
The "following" weekend (after I recovered from my corruption, see below), we got back together and got to the Summit. We lost to the Ancient Dragon four times consecutively and before we knew it, the weekend had, again, passed. Each of us went back to the drawing board and honed our characters. The experience was beneficial and we saw where the weaknesses were in the build and in our strategy.

A couple weeks later we got back together, and finally beat it! The whole room erupted into shouting, just as I had done when beating the Demon Lord for the first time, except there were six of us present. Chthon scored the killing blow. It was pretty sweet!

#3 - My family team bringing me back from a file corruption
I play(ed) this game as a way to have something fun in common with and to do with my kids. It’s important to have fun things to do with them as they get older; there is always something fun to fall back on, always something to discuss that doesn’t involve all the bad things that can happen during the teen years. This game was a great agent for bonding between my kids and me, and aside from being one of my 5 favorite games of all time, that was its main benefit to me.

The weekend Sky City came out, I was one of the many Xbox players to suffer a file corruption. I took 3 weeks off from the game and wasn’t sure I’d ever play again. But the support that my family gave me in getting back in was pretty special. The kids and I took the same ferocity that we’d previously used to fight the Genie King and used it to fight the file corruption instead. Once I was back into the game, it took about 6 weeks to get my team better than they’d been before. The help I got from my family made it possible.

#2 – Redeemer
This one is a little bit hard to talk about. We lost a family pet in February of 2013. It was the first time that my kids had had to come to grips with death, since my Dad had passed away before either of them were really old enough to comprehend. It was particularly difficult for my 13-year old. It was his pet, and he’d grown very fond of it over the years. To compound matters, we knew that the pet had been very ill, and my son (to his great credit) decided to hold the poor creature in his arms while it died, hoping to make it feel as loved and as safe as possible in those final few hours.

The next day, I took the day off from work in order to make the burial arrangements. Once I had that set up for a brief ceremony in the evening, I decided to play one. I wasn’t really in the mood, but I played in honor of our lost pet. I played Moraggo on insane with an AFK, just to ceremonially record a win on the behalf of our pet.

After winning, I was stunned to see that I’d gotten a 159^ oculus. It remains the highest upgrade item I have ever farmed myself. I don’t believe in such things (at all), but I’d be lying to you if I didn’t admit that some small part of me believes that that oculus was a gift from our departed pet.

I named it “Redeemer”. Partly because I believed that that weapon would redeem our team from every loss it ever suffered (it did) and partly as a vague reference to a statue in Brazil in a quasi-religious reference which I’ll not describe further here.
My family team got together (for what seems at this point to be the last time) at Easter. Ironic given the name of the oculus, now that I think of it, but I’ll not digress (somewhere TripletripletripleH is laughing at my wordiness, LOL). Before our ultimate battle with the Old One, I gave away some items to my family teammates. As I passed Redeemer from Chthon to my son’s DPS apprentice (Emerald), here’s what I said.

“As you know, I received this weapon the day after we lost [our pet]. I’ve always considered this weapon a gift from him. I’ve also always known that it wasn’t intended for me.”

#1 - The first time Damocles beat the Demon Lord on Insane.
It was March of 2012. After having been introduced to the game on Super Bowl weekend in January, I had not touched it again. But I recalled it having been fun and that there was a character-building aspect to it that I’d enjoyed. So I signed up for my first ever Xbox Live account (at age 38) and started some characters. I adored the game immediately and played a lot for several weeks.

If you’ll recall, it’s a lot easier to beat the Demon Lord with a squire if you already have a Malificar… My DPS Squire (whose name is Damocles, hence the forum handle) struggled to get even a decent weapon. I think he ended up with a 21^ electric something when it all came down to it.

Damocles lost TWELVE consecutive times to the Demon lord on Insane. Go to the boss fight and lost. My builder (Blackstone) was gaining strength gradually, and defenses were making small, gradual gains. My Aura Monk (Shambala) and traptress (Gabriella) didn’t exist yet. But the real issue was that Damocles’s DPS and armor were just not cutting it.

But one morning (I was in full “I play with every waking moment” mode by now) before work, I decided to give it a shot. And we broke through! I actually jumped up out of my chair, shouted and fist pumped, the whole nine yards! Got a 27^ Malificar, which seemed like an enormous deal at the time, of course. Damocles never lost to the Demon Lord again...

Including “The Rematch”, the day Insane+ came out. Which if not for the striking similarities of the story, would also be on this list. A fully-developed (which for him is level 84) Damocles gave the Demon Lord a rematch the day Insane+ came out and beat him while an orc was beating on the crystal in what my kids still call the most tense and exciting Dungeon Defenders fight they’ve ever witnessed. Out of respect for the opponent, he failed to use the tesla coils at all and prayed that the build held up long enough to hack the old foe down to size. If one more second had passed, he’d have lost. You never, ever get another opportunity to do something for the first time. That first win on the first try on Insane+ against the Demon Lord remains Damocles’s (and my) finest hour.

That was one of the best posts I ever read. I wish my family was cool like yours though I hardly do anything with my dad or mom they don't game. BTW if I win a beta code would you want it, im not 18 .

Deeper Well pains me everytime I look at it along with Endless Spires.

With regard to your Demon Lord problems when me and Fisk first got the game other than being completely taken by surprise by the birds on Magus, spent an age laying out a random squire scattering only to see the crystal get destroyed by an unknown entity. Once we finally got to the Lord and instantly thrown aside we ran Deeper Well over and over and over again just to level up and put up a fight.

The Summit fight on Easy took us over 50 minutes which still remains as my best time as a memento to my little newbie level 20 squire.
