Just permanently lost 60hrs of Open Play due to poor design by Trendy

Recommended Posts

I just copied my ranked to open. The warning was nowhere near strong enough for me to understand I was going to loose everything I had ever done in open. It said "warning you will overwrite data in open". I misinterpreted that to mean it would replace characters I was bringing over not dreaming it would remove my characters that were only in open. By the time I found the help post that said to check the .bak file it was too late since I had already restarted the program. The irony is that the reason I opened it again was to check what the @#$#@ warning said. Would it have killed you guys to have a special backup that only gets written when copying from open? Could you have put a bit more into the warning prompt like "Warning ALL your characters in open will be lost permanently if you continue."

The fact that you have a specific note on the help page to tell me that I'm out of luck if I just copied ranked to open tells me I am not the first person to make this mistake. How about doing something about it - especially since it would be so easy for you to do?

Now I have to explain to my daughter that she can't play her girl Kat anymore since daddy is a moron and deleted her. Thanks Trendy...

I hear you but I bet a better warning would save a lot of people. They obviously get hit with this a lot and it could be easily changed to make it more obvious the copy from ranked was a total wipe of your local data. I get it now that Local play is strongly discouraged - another thing that was not so obvious.

Well software should at least try to protect morons from themselves. That said, not a very classy reply.

You say they obviously get hit with this a lot, but I constantly view these forums and don't remember seeing this much. Where did you get that from?

The part that comes across bad is the sarcastic thank you to trendy. Their message is by no means a 100% fix to inadvertently deleting your data, and your suggestion would most likely save a few more from doing so, but don't blame them for what happend. To them, I'm sure this message was more than adequate.

Honestly, I should of phrased it better. When I first started I allowed someone to play on open and he moved a character from ranked to open just recently so he could test out the steam work shop. Sadly people make mistakes when they aren't paying attention.

Sorry to hear what happened. However I wouldn't call this poor design as the current functionality as the warnings are quite clear(as shown in picture). As for the functionality itself that was overwhelmingly requested by the player base to implement such a function that is used quite often for testing out upgrades, armor, and messing around on Open without having to re-level separate characters on Open. The reason we have the message in the lost characters and items thread is just so all bases are covered when players are seeking information.

Since this post is now more than done for I'm going to go ahead and close this to avoid this thread going any further off.
