Major PC Lag Issue

Recommended Posts

Ever since the last patch, there has been significant lag when playing. All 4 cores are close to max capacity. This seems similar to the controller issue that was spiking the core and causing lag. This must be fixed before the weekend. Worst lag I have had in a long time with this game. Hope Trendy plans on fixing tomorrow!

It does seem a lot more laggy, you're right.
I play with a friend who has 10Mbps up, and until recently we never had problems.
now, mid wave when it's full of mobs, lagtastic. Died so many times.

I can only assume that Trendy didn't add new extra network traffic, and it's the new aura gameplay - many many mobs all taking damage at the same time, and sending that data to the clients has got to be what's causing the problems.

its indredible laggy as soon as i put down my fire tower and traps **** starts too get too 10 seconds lag for everybody who isnt the host so this is clearly something that needs to be patched it started happening after patch .32

Have you gone into the launcher's Configuration tool -> GFX/Sound and toggled the "Don't Use Multi-Threaded Renderer" option?

Yeah I can confirm this... I was actually playing aqua before the patch with 4 players, finished it, all loaded patch, then played another round with the same build...

Initially we all assumed it was the extra server traffic from players all downloading the update that causes the sudden and insane lag, but to my horror i discovered this was permanent?!

My guess is some new calculation added to update that is seriously draining network resources... Something that must be fed back from each client to the server, then to the host. I say this because there is 0 lag of you play solo, but even hosts will now lag badly if they play in groups...

I believe this gets worse the more players are in game - but I'm not 100% sure

Posting system specs would help us and those at Trendy who aren't clairvoyant in assisting you. I'm assuming you have an ATI card since I am seeing a lot of these posts on a lot of other game boards since recent catalyst updates. Yes, CPU overloading because of a GPU driver issue. Try rolling back your catalyst drivers.

yeah my video card also got a lot hotter since the last update by 5 degrees also im using a msi 570 GTX TF 3 and a intel 2500k quadcore so it shouldnt be my cpu noir video card causing the lag this is seriously some patch note in on trendys side

and im not using ati card

It seems that most people are complaining about Network lag, not system/CPU lag. I have been experiencing this myself. If I host a private match i have 0 lag, when I join my friends match I have tons of lag. Everything seems to have a .5-1 second delay (jumping/repairing/upgrading). Never had lag joining his games until recently.

Specs:
Core i7 2600k
8gb 1600mhz ram
Geforce Gtx 560 TI

Gigabyte Ethernet Card
Docsys 3.0 gaming modem 30 down/3 Up

There are two types of lag. Frame Per Second and Network.

FPS is due to all the colourful explosion - you'll typically see this in fireball- or inferno-heavy build. This is because the game uses some utterly insane particle effects, and your graphics card can't keep up. You have 2 options. Lower the settings, or get a better computer. Sorry to be mean, but that's basically it. You may be able to twiddle with your config, but it's basically a performance issue. That's been around forever.

The other one, which is new, is network lag. This is when you rubber-band around, monsters move in straight lines, then disappear, or there's a delay when you jump or repair. This is what's got worse recently.

Since people are now building with many more auras, it would seem to be the problem that's causing it. Each time something happens in the game (move, shoot, monster gets hit by towers), the host needs to send data to all the other players. Because auras damage lots of monsters at the same time (e.g. electric auras hurting lots of gassed monsters at once), the host is having to send a lot more data.

Your computer specs don't affect this - just your network. I play with a dude who hosts on a 10m up/30 meg down line. I lag with him, even in duo, when I never did before. When I host public games, I hear people complaining about lag a lot more too.

If I take the auras away, the lag disappears. This makes me believe that auras are the culprit, but there could also be something else.

So, posting your specs won't help diagnose this network issue.

It more than likely IS due to auras, but you probably won't see a fix for it until Trendy decides DD is popular enough to warrant real servers instead of a host/client setup.

It seems like Trendy was bragging about reaching the 1 mil sales mark MONTHS ago. I know they love to call themselves an Indie developer and all but perhaps it's time to move DD up the ranks and give it some dedicated servers. When you have beta teams, multi-million sales and forums with a constant flood of irate players, perhaps it's time to start treating this Indie game like a REAL game. Colocation onto good networks is cheap these days and moving to dedicated servers would improve lag, reduce cheating and improve cheat-catching immensely..

It's time to stop treating DD like a low-paid game and get it some real servers. If you can brag about selling a million copies of a $3-$15 game (Depending on sales/how and where you bought it) you can brag about a shiny new server or two to vastly improve gameplay.

Network lag is the issue - particle effects have alway been this bad in DD do to my knowledge that hasn't changed. However many many players are reporting bad lag in network games, and the more players the more lag...

I maintain my theory that something is now being fed from the client pcs to the host pc and back again which wasn't there before...

Perhaps some new calculation... But even the host seems to be lagging if he/she adds players to the game.

I seem to experiece the same network lag issues that have been pointed out in this thread as well. However, I'd like to point out something about the gfx caused lag.

Lower the settings, or get a better computer. Sorry to be mean, but that's basically it. You may be able to twiddle with your config, but it's basically a performance issue. That's been around forever.

Heh, running 2 Radeon HD 6850's in crossfire, 8 gigs of RAM, a Phenom II X6 1075T, everything overclocked till where it's just stable... pretty much a rig that I'd put quite a bit above what the average user is using. You're telling people it's a hardware issue. Lol. This game does things that make the fans on my system actually have to work at levels which games such as BF3, Skyrim, etc won't even reach on their maxed out settings. The problem simply lies with DD, not with anyone's systems.

People need to cut the crap about the hardware already and realize that some textures in this game are getting close to the freaking burn in test settings of Furmark. And that's a BAD thing. I'm suprised that people with lesser systems and higher settings aren't getting crashes and stuff yet. Or they just don't notify anyone, since there's probably only a small minority of players active on the forums.

Trendy... please just look at the fire and other gfx already. Several Trendy employees have stated that it's being looked at, but that's several patches ago and we've seen nothing in the notes as of yet. The game was fine when it was new, but these 0.06 firing speeds are taking it's toll, lol. Both on the graphics lag, as well as for the incredible amounts of data being send about the damage numbers for each connected client in a multiplayer game.

I have big CPU lag. I tried changing threaded and it didn't really change that much.

I can't do dat aquanos level. Hitting 10 FPS, can hardly touch the boss on the map even on Low.

GTX 550 Ti
Intel quad core Q6600
4GB RAM
Should be enough info.

Back in December I didn't have this issue :/

I am sad to say but due to this lag i do not intend to buy any more DLC for this game and quite possibly will quit playing this game until the severe lag is fixed... I love to play the game but I just can't stand to play by just standing there and hoping i can repair towers and my pet dps

I 2nd this! Get it fixed or players will be forced to find an alternative lag less game! Ive worked my *** off this past week to get together a group of active players - only to discovered we are punished for playing together with lag that's just beyond belief!

Maybe 1 more post would, djpatje, we never know...
It seems to me that this is due to auras too, mostly.
In my opinion, a solution would be that the damage would not be calculated server-side but client-side, even if this would still not be the more accurate way, and kills would be handled server-side, keeping mob flow clean from any miss-calculation.
This would require maybe a lot of recoding though, as the towers don't have the same comportment if they are in the client screen or not (if you're not the host). But I really think traffic would be lighter if all towers were handled/simulated client side. Only movements, damage from the mobs, building/upgrading/repairing and mobs kills would make the server exchange with the clients during wave (mostly)
