Diablo 3 vs. Dungeon Defenders

Recommended Posts

Guys my point is: DD and Diablo are very similar games.
DD has a lot of D2 inside.
Item Grinding, Coop play and Characters development really look like D2.
Main differences is that Diablo has a bigger world and it has no towers, you attack, you don't defend, which is a good thing since I'm a lazy ***** :)
D3 is going to be a complete new story, though.
They've abandoned the character building story: everybody will have the same stats and skills at the same level and they will only be able to have different strategies and different equipment. It is going to be just about your skill in building your style and how is going to be good your style.
We are speaking of a game that was almost ready in 2006 (if I recall right) and was CANCELED and rebuilt from scratch with another team because it wasn't fun enough. We are speaking about blizzard: this means that the game is going to be Flawless at launch, you won't need 15 patches before being able to play, you are no more a beta tester, you are a gamer. AND this is worth 30 bucks more, in my opinion. They have like 70 developers and artists while trendy, if I recall again correctly, has 3 programmers, and they did great job!
D3 is going to be the game of the year, and probably the game of the 2 or 3 coming years.
DD is a great game, a great idea with very little resources. I'm strongly looking forward to see DD2, I think that trendy got lots of learnings from DD and they will be able to build a way better game, hopefully flawless.

Polls are better suited for titles of the same genre, for example:

FPS War Sims - Modern Warfare 3 vs BattleField3. :)
MMO - EverQuest vs World of Warcraft
Sports - NBA 2k12 vs NBA Live 2012
Racing - Forza vs Gran Torismo

Etc etc, get the jyst?

I will be playing both, probably at the same time lol.

I have been looking forward to D3 for years and years. I will definitely be playing it.

However, I will still be playing Dungeon Defenders, and City of Heroes. I see no reason to restrict myself to just one game when there are so many great ones out there to be played.

I have to agree - DD and D3 seem like completely different games.

To me, DD is tower defense game with some shooter, beat'em up, c'rpg', and (soon) rts elements.

On the other hand, to me, D3 looks like action/adventure game with c'rpg' elements.

My only argument was that they are not "Completely different". They have the same end goal which is to create heroes that are able to kill everything that lays in their path. Yes... How they go about it is different. But as someone who put thousands of hours into D2, DD fills the same kill things, get items need in my heart.

To say they are completely different is to discount the obvious Diablo influence that is found in Dungeon Defenders.

I'm shocked that people say these are completely different games. They are not. The basic mechanics are the same... Kill monsters, get loot. Diablo 3 will most likely replace this game for me. I loved the time I spent with Dungeon defenders, though having to buy the game twice while Im still waiting for them to restore my characters has sucked...

Did you send the email to lostheroes@trendyent.com?

The people who say that they're similar are right and wrong at the same time. The diablo style games don't have towers, and go about the stats differently. There's more stats than in diablo, and they serve different purposes. Diablo is an RPG. DD is a tower defense/RPG. Sure, the base mechanics are there, but that's where they end. Saying DD has a lot of D2 inside is like saying dungeon defenders has a lot of maplestory inside. They have 'co-op' play, item grinding, and character development. You level up, you get skills, and you distribute stats.

Stop comparing the two. They're different games. Not entirely different because they share RPG elements, but that's where it ends. As for what you said, eldiablo80, about a DD2... No. They're not making a DD2. That's not likely. Very unlikely because this game can be expanded more. Heck, I think it'd be cool if the other classes all got their own stories as well. It would make sense.

These games aren't even remotely similar. I'm also highly against the real money auction house in D3, so I won't be playing it. it's a shame, because I wanted to. But I refuse to support that sort of thing. Even if I did play it, it wouldn't be as a replacement for DunDef, again, because they're different kinds of games.

To be fair, the real money auction house only adds a more legitimate replacement for the terrible player-driven system that D2 had. The online-only gameplay and RMAH may seem like downsides at first glance, but if you enjoyed the previous games, this one will be more than worth buying simply because it's the next phase of the greatest hack n' slash series of the genre... only this one will be more secure than the others.

I wouldn't say that it should replace Dungeon Defenders though, just as I would say that it doesn't really fit the role of replacing WoW, SWToR, etc... if you never used d2jsp or bought items for cash, I wouldn't let the RMAH push you away. :)

Speaking of Everquest...

Since Sony opened it up to a f2p model, I figured that it might be fun to revisit some of the content that had come out after I moved on, sometime around Gates of Discord. Let's just say that some things are better left as good memories... ;)

I would say they're similar not so much in gameplay (altho the point and click monster killing is similar) but more in the fact that the hooks (what makes you spend hundreds or hours doing the same thing over and over just to get slightly better stuff) are identical, being randomized stats, unique items that have you always looking forward to the next bit of loot
But the way this poll is looking I think trendy should be worried as d3 is beating dd on its own forums populated mostly by dd addicts like myself

Personally, i will be playing D3 for it has more character progression, solo ability, accessibility, funner play style, a more rationale difficulty curve, and PHAT LEWTZ!

For DD, i loved the strategy of the game up through mid NM, then the time versus reward vs enjoyment drastically decreased. But it did seriously scratch the "Strategy" itch I have.

Does anyone know if Trendy plans to keep adding more DLC after Shard 4 and the summoner? Or is that basically it?

If i recall, this is it for the shard pack, then a whole new set of DLCs will come out. New theme.

Other note, i notice ALOT of people who are moving onto D3 are saying they are stuck on progression in DD. I am in a similar boat, which is why D3 is looking very appetizing for reasonable character progression.

I personally can't wait for May 15th. New Tenacious D album! I'll get D3 and play coop with a friend, but I'll still be playing DD. I'm also looking forward to Torchlight 2.

They're different games. DD is (maybe was) tower defense at it's core. There's a lot of strategy to that. You use different characters, abilities, equipment to finish the goal. D3 is going to be a little more of the hack n slash side of DD and probably be better in that regard. Trendy should focus on the tower defense, keeping solo play, that's what a lot of these games don't have.

I'll try D3, but if it keeps my interest more then a month or two I'll be surprised.

I'm already unhappy with sharkens and it's been a few weeks since I last played, so D3 for me.
Will play LoL until then.
DD lasted like 2 months for me I think, oh well, fun while it lasted.

Maybe I don't see D3 as a similar game because I mainly solo, have one of each character (which are all builders save the Barbarian), and treat DD like every other TD game I've ever played, but with more flash; and the Diablo series, to me, looks like a Black Isle game with all the good bits ripped out. At this point, I think GTA franchise is more of and RPG than the Diablo one.

I find it's not good to compare them, as they don't have similar gameplay. But time played is a different matter.
