Levels 70-74 A perfect example of how NOT to design a game

Recommended Posts

I just came back to the game after stopping around halloween time, and seeing mystic gear I bought some basic gear for all my toons spending 150 mil, then I realized that it requires level 74, so I went to insane glitter and started. I then hit 72 (where the curve just ****s you over) and now I'm thinking about just quitting again because this takes way too long. This is not the way to get people interested in the game again.

it takes me like 3 hours of glitter to get a character to 74. that isn't really a long time.

If you have 8 characters, 4+4 (both gender), and soon Barb and then EV, that's 10 chars, that's 30 hours already, then going to 80 might take even longer... it's not exactly "not a long time."

30 hours to have 8+ max level characters is a breathe of fresh air compared to most games out there.

Agreed in both ways. It felt like ages to get from 70-74 (just hit last night) and now I need a nice long break from DD. I've also played games where it took me almost two years of casual play to hit level 52, looking at you old version FFXI. I hadn't played DD for a while and the grind to 74 is what got me playing again so meh. Darned if you do and darned if ya don't.

Realistically, the curve from 70-74 seems steep only because the levelling from 60-70 is quite frankly a joke imo. With each level being about 100,000 xp, you can blast through 10 levels in no time on insane. So they fixed that but its just because its such a difference that it seems unreasonable.

4 chars at once can be brought to 74 in 6 runs. 2.2m max per PERFECT run (which isn't hard to do) and it requires 18m to max. Even if it's not perfect, you get average 1.9m. Do the math. That's 4 max characters in 6 runs.

8 minute glitters netting 1.8-2.2m exp per run. How is that 30 hours?

edit edit: Is it boring? Yes. But what game that has a leveling system isn't boring to max?

The leveling isn't steep, it just seems that way from the incredibly low ramp of 1-70, which can be achieved in what, 1.5 rounds of Glitter? I welcome the amount of experience, since Mythical items certainly have the pay-off for the hard work.

Heh. Get a character to level 74 in WoW. Then come back and tell us getting to 74 in DunDef takes too long. :P

2 totally different games.

WoW is an MMO
Dungeon Defenders is an indie tower defense game,

Yeah, they're not really comparable. Imagine grinding a new character to 74 in... say... Disgaea. It takes like half as long as getting to 74 in Dungeon Defenders.

Incidentally... getting to 5000 in Disgaea on your first character takes far less time than getting to 74 in WoW on your first character. The numbers and time though aren't terribly telling unless compared to content, of which games like WoW and FFXI have several orders of magnitude more. Even then, those games still have some intolerable grinding, particularly FFXI.

I'm of the opinion that levels should represent something more than an arbitrary barrier to doing new things.

The problem isn't how long it takes, it's the fact that it is entirely pointless other than as a barrier into NM. You need to be level 74 to wear mythics so until you make the grind you can't progress further into the content. If mythics could be worn at 70 then everyone would have all of the NM content to slowly make their way to 74 before the next release. They did it completely backwards.

Well hopefully the new content will be doable at 74 and you can slowly work your way up to the next level cap by playing, not grinding more insane glitter that you've already done 5000 times.

I think that's cool. The more people like you sit on the forum and complain, the more the people who leveled get to enjoy the mode you seem to be unable to get into without having to worry about your negativity infecting our games. It's steep compared to it was. Yes. As long as it doesn't exponentially grow for 75-80 it won't be the end of the world.

I fail to see why you realistically require 8 characters to play, and if it is your choice to play 8 characters, then you're obviously prepared for the excessive leveling required for eight characters.

So you are perfectly okay with supporting bad design? Sorry, but I'm trying to get the game going in the right direction. You may be okay with a subpar product but I like to see good games become great games.

Wow, I never believed people would be stupid enough to support grinding.

I never thought anyone would think a game with 0 grinding would keep peoples attention long enough to live...Becasue it won't

Yes, real content won't keep people busy for long, that's why developers want to encourage replaying it. Replaying can still be challenging (challenge actually forces you to play the game instead of just afking), for example getting higher scores. Grinding Insane Glitter is just pointless.

What they failed at is setting myth gear requirement to 74 instead 71.
71 would mean you still have to have to new content, but free to level your character a way you want it to, instead of forcing you to grind 70-74 with no new content.
