Apprentice Tower Build Guide - The Deeper Well (1) -UNDER CONSTRUCTION-

Recommended Posts

Under Construction =)
I'm still working on this guide, as it will become part of a bigger series.
Im planning to do the first 4 maps like this in 4 different threads,
All linked together in one main thread called the Guide Summary, which i do not have yet..
The links are not working either.
Have fun reading though. The guide itself is complete.

Apprentice Tower Build Guide
- The Deeper Well -

By Nemesis Theory

-----------
Brief Intro
-----------
Hello and welcome to my very first tutorial about Dungeon Defenders.
At first, yes I know writing a guide for a map like this is overkill..
It just happens to be part of a series of guides for different maps, and I want it to be complete.
On survival modes this Guide will be interesting to read though..

Second I would like to refer you to my Guide Summary page in which I will be formally introducing myself.
This is also where I place all the future tutorials regarding the Tower Build for Apprentices and Adepts,
aswell as a place where I will be giving some information on how to fully utilize this build.
You can find this page (if you didn't find it already) over here.

This guide is meant for Apprentices and Adepts ranging from level 1 to 70+.
A perequiste for this guide is that you will have to aim for strong towers, and not for dps or anything secular.
If you do not follow this same idea, chances are your towers will be too weak at higher levels like 'hard' or 'insane'.
When focussing on tower specs, everyone will be able to become successful with this build.
This guide gives you the possibility to get a full 100% effectiveness out of your towers.

This guide is viable for Non-Survival Mode aswell as Survival Mode

Seems im actually promoting my guide in a "brief" intro xD. This is where my Guide Summary is for.
Which I mentioned above. Sorry for this. Lets start with the guide now lol.

-----------
Build Phase Wave 1/5
-----------
You enter the dungeon and you look upon a few huge doors wondering what is behind them.
We're not going to worry about what is behind, since it will get obliterated by your defense anyway.
We ARE going to worry about the placement of your towers though.
So you either have chosen for The Deeper Well campaign on Survival, or not.
If you chose for survival you will have a total of 5 treasure chests with 40 mana in it,
starting at 200 gold. If you did not choose for survival, you will have 160 gold.

As you can see on your map you see that there are five different enemy spawn places.
They will come at you from 4 different paths/lanes to your crystal.
We can all figure that defending 4 different places is a pain,
for you will have to run across the map to repair or upgrade the towers, which is dangerous with your hp.
The best idea would be to focus on two protected points instead of four to avoid things like that.
The four paths eventually come close to eachother nearby the eternal crystal.
The four paths become pairs of two paths melted together.
This is a perfect place to set up our defense.

This wave we will be building two Magic Blockades and two Magic Missle Towers.
I have made a picture for you to see my setup, try to be as exact as possible.
However, you cannot see that I have placed the towers on a Wall.
When you place them on a wall they wont be blocked by obstacles that much.
For example, when you place it a little too much to the left, you wont be able to hit both paths anymore.
So try to build them as high as possible, in this case, the wall that separates the paths.

(if you do not know which symbol represents which tower, please refer to my Guide Summary thread)

This build costs a total of 120 mana.
You should have either 40 or 80 mana left which can be saved up and be used in the next wave building phase,
Or you can use the mana to finish up the buildings meant for the second building phase,
which is not recommended. You can easily do it with two magic missle towers.
Save the mana for emergencies.

-----------
Build Phase Wave 2/5
-----------
Gather all the mana that you have obtained from slaying monsters, including the treasure chests.
With this mana, and your saved up mana from first phase, build two Fireball towers.
Place them as shown in the picture (place them on a wall ! ).

That should do it for this wave

-----------
Build Phase Wave 3/5
-----------
To add some reliable source of strength to your tower dps, were going to add two Lightning Towers.
We're also going to add one Deadly Striker Tower when your mana can afford it.
Dont worry if you can't afford it somehow, It depends on the difficulty level too.
(I mentioned this in my Guide Summary).
Just continue finishing this up as fast as you can, and you should be good.
Since lower levels don't need that much defense anyway ;).
The towers should be placed like this :

As you can see the lightning towers are not on the walls.
This is because you dont want towers too close to your Magic Blockades.
If AOE enemies hit your towers they might hit the lightning tower too.
Also keep in mind when placing the lightning towers,
that we are going to place two more Magic Blockades in front of them on each side.
So try to keep your distance between them.

As for the Deadly Striker Tower, we want it to shoot the higher hp monsters on the right,
and we want it to shoot on the initial lower level monsters.
To get them both in angle of your tower, place him like this :

Since it shoots trough walls, you can get the maximum out of the tower when placing it like this.
That will definetely do...

-----------
Build Phase Wave 4/5
-----------
This is where enemies start coming trough the other two pathways/lanes.
We have to finish up our walls over there.
That is what we're going to do right now.
Add four more Magic Blockades, two on each side. After that, add one deadly striker tower at the left side,
mentioned in the minimap picture.
Try to angle him on the shield like shown with the image of the other striker tower.
You may also choose to build something else instead of deadly striker towers, depending on your needings.

Now, to top things off we could finish our defensive points by placing one Magic missle tower on the left side,
and one fireball tower on the right side. Place them both on the walls when possible.
Why were placing the fireball at the right side is because the right side is a bit harder.
If i remember correct, at wave 10 on insane and/or hard the difficulty increases by a lot at once over there.

You will have maximized your defensive points now, 60/60.

-----------
Ending
-----------
When having just a few stats spent on towers, it should be impossible to lose with this setup on Insane non survival.
That concludes the end of this build. Wave 5/5 should be one without worries for you now.
And when playing survival, you will be able to come quite far depending on your stats.
Atleast the blame won't be on your tower setup now ;).

Thanks for viewing this guide.

Hello Jetah,

Thank you for the reply.
The Defenders Layout Planner looks really interesting.
Is there also a way to actually turn the images to let the towers face the right angle ?
As for the hyperlinks. I'm well aware they are not working ;).
I do not have any other threads to link to, that's why I gave them a color for now.
I will finish it soon.

Thank you for the reply,
NemesisTheory

This is HUGELY long and overly unnecessary. You should need gigantic essays to explain how builds work and why they work, and if people need such essays to complete even the simplest maps then maybe this game isn't for them.

There is a help on the webside. It says "click a defense - use arrow keys left/right to turn the defenses"

Thank you for your reaction.
This guide will be a series of many guides, not only this map.
It just doesn't feel complete when you leave one map out, even though it is so simple.

And to be honest, would you read a guide when it would contain a gigantic essay ?
I did mention how to place the towers, and why they should place it like that.
I find that this is enough, especially for The Deeper Well...

Apart from that, i'm using it as reference work for myself.

Thanks!

NemesisTheory,

Thank you for this guide. I had read elsewhere that Deeper Well on Insane is a great way for new players to get levels and mana without leaching off of public games. As a newer player, it is a bit more difficult to determine what strategies are effective and which are less so. This guide is perfect for apprentices who are new to Dungeon Defenders. This thread is an asset to the community, for sure.

I would like to argue that this thread is NOT an unnecessary "essay". Players who are experienced enough to need none of the extra details present in the thread need only skim the screen shots provided in the thread. (I'm not sure why you'd need a tower build guide anyways if you're so pr0z0rs.)

Again, from a new player, thank you for taking the time to write this up.

Thanks a lot for this quality reply on my guide Paradigm Entropy,
I appreciate the compliments you have mentioned.
You are completely right about the fact this guide is most efficient for new players, for they just want to reach the next level on all difficulties instead of knowing the best tower setup to do things.
Thank you again, I will take this into account when I make the next few tutorials.
