Game became unplayable.

Recommended Posts

so i started playing this game about a week ago, was enjoying myself and even got some friends to join me.

and then 2 days ago the game decided i dont get to play any more. increasingly bad lag spikes, rising ping, its taking me literally 13 seconds to press G, the game is teleporting me to 19 seperate places on the map when i tap the W key.

i want to know WTF has happened, because right now the game is literally unplayable.

(i have Unistalled/Reinstalled, i have reset my internet modem 4 times, ive updated and re updated every driver on my PC, this issue is 10000000000% with the games code/servers and id LOVE to know an ETA on it being fixed so i dont feel like the money i have spent on this game was a complete waste that i practically gave to Scammers who cant make a working product)

I have also noticed that the servers are getting terrible.

The sad truth is that the game is dead. Less than 1k players at any given time. Usually goes around from 500 to 800 players, even on weekends. And this is during lockdown when people are stuck at home!

The obvious answer is that Chromatic has downgraded its servers for the game to as low as possible. There just aren't enough servers and a lot of them are probably already overloaded trying to run the game. I am not 100% but it looks like Chromatic is leasing servers from a service and runs a certain number. It starts very small (enough for say 500 players) and dynamically adjusts according to their agreement with their server provider.

I know because I have been kicked out of the game when lag started getting bad and when I try to connect it says, "GameServer is being adjusted to add more server capacity" or something to that effect.

Basically, the game is dead and only has the minimum possible support from Chromatic. They do not care about this game anymore because they are prioritizing DDA.

On Tuesday PC had 1100+ players at peak, so Idk where you are getting your stats but I would check them again. The game has hovered these kind of numbers for the past few years so not dead. Also every 6 months or so the "Game is dead" threads pop up and they are never true.

During peak times the servers do struggle we have seen it a lot and during low times the server has zero issues which we have also seen a bunch.

They are prioritizing DDA but that is because they are trying to make the game succeed and doing it remotely due to covid but that doesnt mean they have given up all hope for DD2, they are still planning on supporting it, they just need to get DDA on its feet first.

The servers never had this problem last year when I stopped playing. When I came back last month this lagathon was here to greet me.

The numbers are lower now than they were last year. I just check Steam's "In Game" numbers. Game is not "dead dead" but for most intents and purposes it is a dead game. You can deny it all you want but in my book any game under 1,000 players normally is a dead game. It may "peak" above 1k occassionally but mostly it doesn't. Again, the server lag is the real issue. It was never this bad last year or the years prior.

I don't need any support for DD2. Updates would be fine but I doubt we'll get any until next year at best. I just want them to fix the servers.

Well Im sorry but looking at steam charts none of it is corroborating your numbers. Over the past few months I have been watching these charts nearly daily to see how DD2 is doing against DDA to see when the player count declines and it doesnt even flinch when DDA gets a patch. I've also included DD1 in the chart comparison I watch because reasons.

This does not sound like a server or game code issue, this sounds perfectly like an internet issue. Which could come down to an issue along the path your data takes to get to the server having a problem and is not fixable by Chromatic because they wouldn't own the line or nodes between you and them.

on Ps4 there was a spike in people playing before the virus hit and now with people staying home even more i believe its putting a strain on servers i could be wrong though

I joined today and wanted to see if the issues OP mentioned were persistent and normal before I spent money.

I find it extremely difficult to believe anything you said here for a few reasons.

1. I logged into a Christmas holiday event complete with presents. Very cool, except it's May. Christmas has been over for nearly 6 months now. That's not what happens in a game being updated by the devs.

2. It's apparently an unoptimized mess. I'm lucky if I get 25 FPS and it commonly drops to 10 and below. On every map.

3. The lag shows a lack of care and maintenance for the servers.

Now you can argue against that all you want, but it has prevented me from spending money on it and playing it often. I'm glad I checked around here before spending money on it.

If the device are still supporting it, they're doing a piss poor job. This is as a new player that has no dog in the fanboy fights. There's absolutely no way I'd hand money to this dev team for the game. It's been out long enough that none of the performance issues should still be an issue. This leads me to believe the devs are uncaring or incompetent. Either way, the very real issues and complete lack of dev support means money from this potential customer.

It's honestly a shame as well because there's a fun game concept under all the issues. It reminded me very much of OMD, which I love and plunked a lot of hours into. Care, don't care, agree, disagree, but this is my take as a new player.

TL;DR:

"Devs are totally updating and managing the game"

If that's the case, why is there still a Christmas event running from last year?

In May?

I know that, I never said I had to spend money, I said I won't drop money on it because from my viewpoint as a new player, the device are making another game while this one seemingly fails.

At least that's my perception based on the poor optimization and lack of care to turn off or change a Christmas holiday theme and event, especially when we're just getting ready to start summer.

6 months later.

Not a good impression for a new player and they lost a potential paying customer because of it. They can't even bother improving performance so your frames don't drop into single digits the second anything starts happening due to all the animations and trap effects.

It also means I'm going to avoid the next dungeon defender game if it has a price tag on it instead of being F2P because I don't know or trust this dev company now.

All based on exactly what the OP was talking about. Maybe they'll see this and care, but it's doubtful based in what I've seen and read.

Hi there! We have not forgotten about DD2! We are just a small team and focusing right now on launching our flagship game for us as a new company.

I get and understand that. I'm explaining this from the perspective of a new player. The Christmas event running through May is not a good optic.

It makes me hesitant to spend any money. Toss in the performance issues making constant framerate drops a big issue, even when playing solo and it doesn't instill me with a lot of confidence for these issues being fixed because they've apparently been an issue for a while now.

Your game premise is awesome, I loved OMD and this has a similar flavor, but the performance issues make it nearly unplayable. I sincerely hope you guys can get it fixed though because you've got a great potential game IMO.

DD2 has been out for several years now and There's alot of people playing still on PS4 / and for being unplayable i don't see it as bad as you / THE lost temple and high seas maps can get laggy when there's alot of enemies but still playable on PS4

idk if y noticed but, theyre starting to update again :D chromium is growing and dd2 has its own team now :D

also to fix your fps issues make sure its on fullscreen and has your main gpu selected in your gpu settings, this is something that goes for all games, when a game is on fullscreen windowed or just windowed, all the background programs remain fully active aswell as your desktop itself, it has to load in all these things wich will blow up your fps to smitherenes, i recomend you to go fullscreen, frick discord, frick steam overlay, people should learn to be patient from a responce from you (if thats the issue), also make sure dd2 uses your main gpu/your best gpu, to do so close your programs till you see your main desktop, right klick it, klick on nvidia settings (for nvidia gpus obv) or amd settings (for amd gpus obv), go to 3d settings or watever its called for amd (i use nvidia), klick on the slidedownbar thingy and select manualy set, then go to dd2's exe file and select, then everything else will explain itself, just make sure it uses your best gpu :D
if you play on xbox one or ps4 then im sorry, consoles suffer from the HUUUUUGE amount of enemies and partickles on the screen, this is one of the many reasons i prefer desktops and laptops over concoles, you cant set up your preferred graphic settings and stuff

have a nice day, or y know, since your coment is over a year old at this point :joy:
