Dd1 and dd2 general comparison, and hopes for the future.

Recommended Posts

So to start this off, i have played THOUSANDS OF HOURS on dd1 on both pc and ps3. It is easily my most played game. I was eagerly awaiting, and searching daily for any news up to the announcment and release of dd2. When the day finally arrived to buy the top tier founders pack first on pc, then on ps4. I sunk endless hours into the game, despite the unbalanced gameplay, and character wipes. I kept playing until a year ago, when i finally gave up on the game. After over a thousand hours, i realized that i hadnt even enjoyed much of my time, and the only thing making me play it was the name. So lets take a moment, and talk abot what made dd1 such a great game.

Level grinding, instead of gear grinding.

Lets face it, the xp grinding was a pain, but always gave players a sense of progression after every sucessful stage. In the second entry, progression seems to just hit a plateau like every pay to win mobile app. There are never any memorable moments, as you finally hit level 78, and can finally equip that new teir of equipment you have been itching to put on.

Equipment overcomplication

The over complicated equipment in dd2 just seems to take away from the moment to moment stratagy, trying to beat the level with what crappy towers you have. I loved the simple stats, fun wepons, and focus on the core eliments of tower defence and action that made dd1 such a joy to play over and over again. I want to play the game, not spend hours, days or weeks trying to figure out what equipment works with my build.

What else do you guys think made dd1 such a great game? And what do you think could be done to fix or improve dd2? Is anyone else as impatient as me for a full re release of the first game on current consoles? Lets talk. Lets make some noise that trendy entertainment cant ignore. And lets get the game we have been eagerly awaiting for years.

I've sunk thousands of hours into DD1 as well.  I was excited for DD2 originally but I was honestly completely put off by the artwork.  I was only able to play a little bit of DD2.  DD1 is just so great.  The gameplay, the progression, the artwork, the simplicity (with a dash of interesting complexities such as situational pets, armor farming with just summoners, mana generation for upgrading etc.).

I'd love to see a new DD1 release that kept the same artwork and gameplay but updated the dev tools and game engine to the latest and greatest but I doubt that will ever happen unfortunately.  The CDT has been kicking butt these last few years keeping the game fresh with new maps and weapons and pets and bug fixes so that's been really wonderful.

It's quite simple. DD1 was a real tower defense game. Heroes were specialised in doing one thing.

DD2 changed it's direction many times, first time when changing gear and then again when changing heroes.

The hero swap mid-wave mechanic was the worst decision in my opinion that has been made. DD1 was hard to play in the beginning, especially as a solo player. But that is exactly what a co-op game should be alone - HARD.

I understand that they wanted to get more money out of DD2 and I am totally fine with that. But the game itself is not a worthy successor of DD1. You actually needed some tactics to beat the maps. They kept pushing content over the years with enemies that were a freakin pain in the ass. Which is good. I see a few complaining that "please no return of spiders, djinns etc in DD2". But the game right now is very boring to play in waves. A dps hero isn't even needed. Like, never if you're not in onslought 100+ or 150+.

DD2 was too much of an experiment. It's missing specialised characters. Some would argue that some people have 3 monks - one for Flame Aura, one for Sky Guard, one for lightning. But this is just for endgame onslought. Otherwise, for content, you can brain-afk the game. Barricades are totally wothless right now. As well as probably 80% of the towers. Every builder hero can also kill a boss. A builder. I could keep going with examples.

And unfortunately it's way too late to change some of the core mechanics. I stopped playing in the pre-alpha when they introduced the hot swap feature in waves and the deck with four heroes. This was the point where it all started - the game going into the wrong direction.

Edit: The Defense Council had Steam, Skype as well as other groups and communicated a lot. I don't want to say that Trendy ignored us back then, but they definitely followed their plans. I don't think there wasn't much of other opinions involved in the current game state.
