Upcoming Server Changes

Recommended Posts

zUYNtPy.jpg

Your frozen water friend here with news regarding upcoming network and server changes! We have some testing to finish up, but you should see these changes within the next two weeks. These changes apply to all platforms, so everyone will benefit! First, we’re focusing on getting players connected and keeping them connected. After this is accomplished, gears will be shifted towards ensuring a fluid experience at all times!

Logging In:

We notice that players may run into login issues for a myriad of reasons. Maybe third party services, such as Steam, PSN, or XBL, are having issues; or perhaps the connection between the servers and you isn’t the best. Previously we pushed out a few changes regarding these systems, for example, letting you know if a firewall was preventing you from connecting. We built upon this by adding in additional login features to improve the initial login connectivity.

Event Server Connection:

In game, all clients keep a special connection open to “event servers”. They’re the friendly fellows who inform you about server events, like where to go when you matchmake, if you receive a party request, etc. Currently, the issue with this is if you get disconnected, you’re immediately kicked from the game. This can be caused by maybe the internet cloud is angry, your ISP or our servers hiccupped, or your client just fails to respond randomly. You may have experienced this with various errors like “Playverse login has expired.” Or “Session timed out.” We’re taking on this issue in a two-step approach:

  1. If you lose your connection, you are no longer kicked immediately. You can continue to keep playing the map out entirely. For Onslaught, this means if you lose the connection on map 2, you can keep playing until you finish map 3. Once you complete the map and attempt to transition to Town/Tavern while not having the event server connection, you’re sent back to the main menu to re-login completely.
  2. Once the client notices the connection is lost, it now keeps attempting to re-establish your connection behind the scenes. If the client re-stablishes the connection before a transition attempt, the game continues like nothing ever happened (outside maybe a notice that a connection was lost at one point).

If you purchase gems from platform specific stores (Steam, PSN, or XBL) or spend them, the changes are applied to your account, but they may not show for you client-side until you successfully reconnect.

Lag and Micro-stuttering:

We are continuing to investigate lag and micro-stuttering. There are additional information gathering systems we are implementing to understand what’s really going on when players experience these two things. We believe our servers are too strict on where you’re supposed to be as you move, and as a result places you back into place repeatedly. It’s a top concern for us to make sure even Defenders with not the best connections have a great experience while playing. We’re doing everything we can to make this better on all fronts!

If you’re running into constant micro stuttering or just a really rubberbanding/lagging experience even though you have a really good connection to other games please send me a private message directly with your GamerName, Platform, and Region you are on. Thank you ^^

Woah! Thats crazy. So the stuff is all stored locally? Seems like that could cause some problems.

Nah, everything is still stored server side. There's two pieces to it though, the game server and the event server. The event server just is informative while the game server is still purely authoritative. If you were to lose your game server connection then you will be kicked but that's not the issue we're seeing.

I've been longing for something like this for a while. The two-step approach will dramatically increase QOL within Onslaught.

Since floor progress is saved in the transition between maps, will it be saved if we're sent to the main menu to log back in?

Sorry if i didn't see this But how is this going to affect Group play, if i group with another person and the server drops for some unknown reason will there still be a group in that map or will it drop the other players leaving you alone?

Nope sorry, if you leave the map for what ever reason the progress is lost. This just prevents you from being kicked back to the main menu and losing that progress.

Groups will still exist in both regards (being a party with someone and group of people on a map) and shouldn't be affected unless you transition out of the map/server and one of the members doesn't have the connection re-established in time, then they will not be coming with and will pushed back to the main menu.

I noticed the "pause" tonight was much smaller and quick on lost temple. No crashes tonight on floor 85 86 but we did not have to replay or retry any tonight.

I didn't mean leaving the floor of your own accord. I understand this isn't a checkpoint system. It's just, I noticed anytime I or someone else completed a floor and the transition into the next floor/tavern/hub was interrupted for whatever reason (be it quitting the game, crashing, losing connection, etc.), the previous floor's progress would be lost. That is, the game would not remember what floor was just completed.

I was wondering whether that would be the case for this system you're implementing where it forces you to the main menu to log back in after attempting to transition to the next floor/tavern/hub from your completed floor. However, given your response, it sounds like that wouldn't be the case.

This might be a little off subject but it would be so nice to get a save between maps in onslaught. a lot of people are not even playing because of the time it takes to do 3 maps. I am totally burned out on it at this point after 3 resets and down to just playing once in a while because of the commitment involved .

In time, I'd like there to be a checkpoint system for Onslaught and even something that enables you to play your highest completed floor upon completing floor 65 each prestige. Both are good ideas to keep motivation up for pushing Onslaught, not just for anyone getting burned out but also for those with less time to play the game.

For now, this system should be sufficient for reducing anxiety players face with Onslaught. It certainly is gonna improve my experience, having lost well over a dozen floors to Playverse expiring.

Except I just got disconnected on wave 5 and now I have to start the whole floor over. Has this been implemented yet or do I have to wait till the next patch?
