Feedback from a returning player

So, after a long time (slightly less than a year I think) I decided to start playing DD2 again just to see what Mastery and Onslaught were all about. Let's start from Mastery:

What I didn't like

How am I supposed to build a map in less than 30 seconds? How am I supposed to beat a map only using Blockades? How am I supposed to use 10 different towers with an 800 DU limit in some maps? Keep in mind, there are people (me included) who prefear to play solo. Other rules like no upgrades/repairs/sell are... meh, especially if you misplace something while you are building and you are forced to restart the whole map. And a map (or more?) has all 3 of these challenges, I can do so much by myself without upgrading and selling, but at least let me repair. I guess I could ignore a mission or two and not get the extra Perfectionist star and replay the map a second time to get the rest, but that would be boring. I gave up after getting the first Shard, as soon as I noticed that I need something like 100 stars for the next one. Sure some rules are fun but after all it's always the same maps, sometimes even the same builds, with the same old Chaos enemies.

What I liked

As I said, some rules were fine, like "build no anti air" or "no hero deaths". I liked having to play it safe, having to think twice before jumping in a mass of enemies while low on health (even though healing is too easy in this game) and letting my towers deal with them. I liked having to build 10 different towers (when the DU limit was high enough, of course). It actually felt like a proper strategy game and I'm sure this rule in particular forced people to use other stuff than the usual OP meta spam towers like Flame Auras, Ramsters, Spike Blockades, Proton Beams and Weapon Manufacturers. In fact, I started loving Explosive Traps after using them on Mastery and I started using them more even in Onslaught. I liked challenges that didn't force you to not use a certian type of defense while I liked rules that forced me to play like it's a normal TD game with slight variations, if that makes sense.

In conclusion: "don't build X", "build only X" no, it's basically the same as some chaos tiers where you can't use projectiles or traps/auras. "Don't die", "don't spam OP stuff and actually use your head" yes. "Don't upgrade/sell/repair" yes BUT not all of them at once.


Now, Onslaught:

What I didn't like

F#@%ing chaos enemies here too? Some lanes require you to use reflect beams due to the presence of "thrower" enemies, right? Then why do we have Cyborcs on the same lane as Hex Throwers/90+ bomb throwing goblins? I get it, using 30/40 DU on a reflect beam and ignore a whole lane would be too much but if you don't want us to use reflect beams then at least reduce the damage Hex Throwers do or the number of enemies on that lane. Zappers can snipe your towers so if you get Cyborcs near a Fliers lane with Zappers it becomes 10 times harder to place your defenses, even though I guess you could build an Obelisk to tank Zappers but that's 60 DU just to prevent 2/3 enemies from messing up a whole lane. Controlled Burn with Cyborcs is a nightmare. If you have Geodes you can use Slimes and DPS with the Dryad in Corrupted form, Geysers, Oil Geysers, Protons with the freeze shard, Snaking Sands and more other traps, but if you get Cyborcs you are left with 2 or 3 towers. Some other modifiers like ones that increase the HP of enemies are fine but every time I get one on Fliers Zappers always manage to explode on my AA, which wouldn't be a problem but some maps *cough*Nimbus, both throne rooms, both ramparts*cough* have such a limited ammount of DU and building 2 AAs for 1 lane is too much (since sometimes you can't place auras that can hit Fliers or PDTs/Cannons since there might be Geodes that can reflect projectiles in a lane nearby). I feel like some lanes are just too crazy, like the frosty fodder where you have 100+ enemies. If you get Controlled Burn on that lane it's GG. Some enemies have waaaaay too much HP, like Cyborcs, Lady Orcs and those big frozen orc looking guys. As I said, some maps NEED more DU, especially since most of the times you are forced to use reflect beams that take away 20/40 or even 50 DU PER LANE.

What I liked

Other than that I LOVED Onslaught, Phased is one of my favourite modifiers, it forces you to throw down enough DPS to kill enemies without using blockades. I don't know what you did but Flame Auras don't look so OP in Onslaught, maybe it's because enemies have more HP, which is cool (even though as I said, some could use a little less). Controlled Burn is a great modifier if there are no Cyborcs around, they force you to play around with a limited selection of towers and traps. The new map is AMAZING, I love how new lanes open up after a few waves and I love how vast it is (even though it could benefit from teleporters or something to move around faster). Onslaught is a great mode that has the potential of becoming even better with the right updates!


That's it for Mastery and Onslaught, but I still have some things to say about the game in general. Some game breaking and annoying glitches and mechanics that are here since Chaos was released haven't been fixed yet. Lady Orcs jumping blockades, stuck monsters and bosses, assassins damaging cores, assassins preventing you from doing anything (even pinging on the map, come on), you still can't kick someone instantly, some towers/traps/auras are STILL useless, some towers/traps/auras are STILL too OP, when Chaos came out I remember seeing tons of threads about Chaos enemies and how annoying they were, people complained about them and they never got changed. I could go on but I'll stop here. Sorry if I sounded bitter and salty but I really like the game and it makes me sad to see some old (and even game breaking) bugs still here and Loot Boxes (because that's what defender pacs are, after all), costumes and cosmetics being added along with new glitches with every update, like the current Dryad one. It really looks like you don't test your updates, like that time AOE towers stopped working. I really hope that's not how it is.

Are Chaos enemies ever going to be changed?

Are there any changes coming to Onslaught/Mastery?

I recommend getting Vicious Strikes from Mastery (second hyper shard) for Onslaught climbing.  

 Vicious ramster x2 will soften  large packs of mobs and bees will do the rest.  There's quite a few tricks to deal with certain lane schedules like frosty fodder.  2 Vicious ramsters, 2 bees, and 1 fissure/flame aura (close to wall if there is a cybork) and you can ignore the lane after the first round of upgrades.  Explosive traps with Power Transfer work really well on spellbreaker non-cybork lanes.  Also there's ALOT of sneaky fissure placements that cyborks will ignore.   You can put a totem on a frost tower, obelisk, or serpent's coil as "bait towers" if you need to protect your towers from EMP air lanes (kobolts).  Those are just a few tricks.


I've just got my second ancient power and I can tell you Vicious Strikes is the MVP shard (with deadly strikes) for climbing, either on the ramster or on the dryad tree.  It makes their ranges HUGE.  You can pick the easy masteries to do in any tier, and you don't need perfects, though perfects are nice. Just collect those stars.  Its worth it.

Definitely get the extra 105 stars or whatever for viscous strikes. Game changing. With all 7 chaos levels open for mastery you can get a lot of 2-3 star wins and move to next map. F those no blockades or 30 sec maps. I played all mastery solo, too and it was terrible! But get viscous strikes for sure :)
