The Dungeon Defenders Cycle

Recommended Posts

I don't know if it's just me, but I've always played DD games in Cycles. A cycle is composed of:

  1. Play alot because of new content
  2. Gear Enough to AFK AFKable maps
  3. Burn out Farming
  4. Stop playing until a big change comes

I have currently reached my 3rd cycle for DD2 and have stopped playing. Anyone else do the same thing?

Thats a very fitting description of how i play ALOT of my favorite games. I'm just coming towards an end on my first "DD2 Cycle". Considering going another "Xcom2 Cycle" since it got an update a bit ago.

I agree with you, but what does this mean for the game? Is it a bad thing, or is it something thats just to be expected these days, with the way gamers approach games?

What do you think?

i have 27 characters, all 740+ ipwr

and i barely play anymore because of how boring and uncreative this game is

everytime they release a new character, takes me less than a day to finish gearing and figuring out a playstyle

everytime they release a new map, i finish it on my first try and i give up and stop playing

i used to play with limitation set for myself, ie: can only use what builds, can only use xxx amount of DU, can only play without dps, no walls, etc, but the game just got so repetitive that I dont see the point of limiting myself just so i can have fun

i used to have fun farming unique weapons and whatnot, but i reached a point where i have everything, so there's nothing else for me to do besides farming the best of the best of the best possible RNG-based passive on highest ipwr (which i dont even want because that's super duper boring)

granted i did the same thing in DD1 but the game had a lot more to offer that lets me spent nearly 2k hours...DD2 pales in comparison and i'm not about to waste my time for so little content

I'd be hella surprised if he was :P Zirzor was quite litterally a plague on the steam forums. Iv'e yet to see anyone in his league here on this forum ;)

Even tho i don't rly like people who need to point out how good their gear is, since in most cases it just shows how much mindless afk farming they've done while watching netflix :P

Wow, lol, holy fudge stick! Did you seriously just post this!? Did we really need to know how long your hero deck is!? G(ood) F(or) Y(ou). GFY, man. How does this relate AT ALL to DISCUSSING what the OP stated. He was trying to see how people feel about loot grinding as a design choice when all you saw was an opportunity to show the world how big it is. Did you even try to SUGGEST something different Trendy could try? Did you even try to STIMULATE the conversation by REFERENCING something you read or saw that mentioned something along the lines of, I don't know, addiction? NO! You just came in & had to be like, "look what I can do!"

Big, flipping whoop for you, crying a river over there.

Yeah, @deathrow, you touched on a pretty important topic. There's a lot of research going on into the philosophy of video game rewards. I've heard some companies are even funding research into how to make games & reward systems more addictive and enticing (kind of like with casinos & gambling). The implications are all pretty interesting (& honestly, scary). I believe you can type "video games, rewards, mentality (or philosophy of)" into Google & pull out a megaton of stuff to go through.

i was demonstrating i basically lost count the amount of cycle ive gone thru based on what OP described by presenting my stuff

even had a post on every legendary available in the game

https://dungeondefenders.com/2/topic/135819/index-of-legendary-items?scrollTo=1225545

even saying i stopped because i no longer see the point even after trying various ways of playstyle

there are people with 60+ characters and 4k+ hours spent and repeats the same thing over and over

1. I played every day since November 2015 until AL release, then it took me a week to gear pretty perfect gear. Stopped playing cus the game became to boring, to much afking in Onslaught and other maps.

2. Tried out Ev but realized she didn't really need spesific stats to be stronger and it wasn't really a downside to be without, swapped some upgraded 700 ipwr gear on her from my flamethrower apprentice and it was done :p

Now I just wait for the starter hero reworks comming this week, not sure if they will add more health to the monsters too.

What do you think?

I definitely think it's just how DD as a genre is. It doesn't mean it's a bad game, it's just a game that has a ceiling when it comes to replay value like all other games.

For now, I'm waiting for a fundamental change in the game before I play again. Maps are well and good, but the loot, game play, & progression is what I love about the DD games and sadly I've reached a certain point where what we currently have isn't enough to hold my attention.

I'm at the "can't be bothered to play even with triple medals " stage of the cycle.

Every loot based system is going to suffer this same cycle. As much as it hurts me to always compare this game, Diablo genre suffered the same, so they introduced seasons and ladderboards to keep people (that remained behind, while others moved on) engaged into the game.

I really had high hopes for Campaign mode in this game and leveling Alts. If they sped up map completion and made it so that Campaign mode got you from 1 - 50 once you're done and rewarded you with some unique weapon for your class, it might have extended some gameplay for the casuals and people who left.

I even remember a group of us challenging ourselves by leveling up in Campaign without using any towers at all and trying to make it as far as we could. The only exception we had at the time was able to use Pets. Those were some good times! *nostalgia*

The only reason why I'm still here is because I still have faith or at least want to have faith that Trendy will be very successful with this game and I'm being extremely patient with them.

GG Deathrow for hitting the nail on the head with a really accurate cycle for I'm sure a lot of people.

Sadly, I also agree with [[52650,users]] I'm currently at the same stage ... FeelsBadMan

The biggest problem that DD2 suffers from is what DD1 did amazing in and that was variety. DD2 has such a small gap in gear stats across all tiers that its absurdly easy to max out characters. Theres also a distinct lack of basic stat variety that makes it really boring when building gear sets unlike in DD1. Theres not enough appeal for people who like a hardcore grind unlike DD1 and its really where DD2 is falling flat on its face atm. Hopefully in the future Trendy will fix that. If i remember right a few dev streams ago they stated that they were going to focus on the crazy stats like DD1 had but that wont be until way later.
