why so many free copies?

Recommended Posts

hi, so i bought the pack back when it was starting out and i have the meager bonus they gave us for doing so. but i'm a bit annoyed that they are giving out such a high volume of games for free. i was told there were about 10,000 game codes for free.

so i was wondering if trendy might give us players who helped them build the game a little bit of a refund, or maybe a permanent discount in game or something. cause while the 4 extra accessories are nice and all, I don't think they are worth more than $1 in total, and the original asking price of the game was like $45. I'm feeling a bit jipped.

I also feel that this latest release of free games is in direct response to the many seasoned players leaving the game, as trendy is still in alpha and they do still need players, but their stats have them at about 1000 or less players and dropping steadily ever since the big wipe in july.

Presumably the free copies don't come with gems.  When you bought the game for $X, you recieved $X worth of gems.  That was the deal.

P.S. - "jipped" is a racial slur.  It probably isn't commonly recognized that this is the case, so I'm not really coming down on you for having used it.  Just know in the future that this is the case.

When you purchased the game, you received some in game gems and skins. That was your reward for helping Trendy monetarily and for helping Trendy test out Pre-Alpha :)

The latest key giveaway is simply adding more people to try out and test the game so they can get feedback from a larger audience as the game moves closer to Open Alpha/Closed Beta.

if i really spent all that money and all i got were gems i want my money back. it's not like trendy has sided with me for any of their features, nor do i put much monetary value in the gems. at best i would say it's a $5 value, and that's including all the skins.

i don't much care about people getting offended. i'm not some politically correct politician.

I am sorry you feel that way, but it was clear before you purchased it via Steam, exactly what you were paying for >.<

WHAT THE DEVELOPERS HAVE TO SAY:

"Our game has bugs, missing features, and balance work still to go. Along the way we will be adding new features that may require limited resets. Our goal is to minimize these as much as possible, and there will not be a specific reset when we exit Early Access. Please only purchase access if you’re excited to play the game in this state.”

and

Dungeon Defenders II Defenders Pack ($24.99) comes with:

  • $30 in-game currency (3000 gems)
  • 4 Exclusive Hero Accessories
  • 2 additional Hero Creation Slots
All Early Access billing is handled by Steam. See here.

You're annoyed that they're giving out a huge volume of keys because you had to pay for one, even though you got $30 in currency (which is more than what you payed for already) plus exclusive items. What about when the game goes free to play, would you still feel mistreated?

DD2 will have a lot more than 1-2k daily players when the game is finished and free-to-play. Your DD2 purchase was totally worth it and you should be happy, plus it supports the devs.

I don't know if you realized yet but DD2 is going to be free to play eventually so what's wrong with free copies? The point of buying the game early is to support the devs.

I have to agree with the people that posted. The game will be f2p so there is no harm in new players coming in at this point. In fact I think it was a smart move since they will get new insight from players starting from the beginning with the recent economy changes. Many of which I think actually hurt the new player experience but my opinion is based pre patch and for all I know the new players may be fine with pricing and what not. Either way I think this feedback will only help the game as it moves toward release.

I bought the game and the collector's edition upgrade too.  Both were on sale when I did, but still.  I was fully aware that the game would be free to play one day, and I don't regret my decision to spend the money one bit.

I have one friend who declined to grab a free code and said he'd rather pay and get the extras (he's on a vacation trip now and will get the game once he comes back).

Always think carefully before you buy.

You can be salty about a lot of things and unhappy about their focus / balance / ability to deliver stable patches.  However it is all buyer beware when you dive into a pre-release purchase, it's well known it's headed to free play and clear what you do and dont get.

Kudos to them for frankly a fantastic pre-alpha IMO.  I found that better balanced, enjoyable and more stable since they claimed they put big boy pants on for Alpha to be honest.  For me its brought up real questions if they have the ability to handle this effort properly, but I always have the option to ignore it for awhile (a lot have, I mostly have) to see if they can right the ship, hopefully taking our feedback seriously.

If this goes nowhere, I spent $20-25 on some DD2 entertainment as a big DD1 fan with too many hours logged, and already a lot of DD2 logged.  I want it to succeed and be the great game it can be, but thats not in my power to determine.  I do worry about focus (eg a homeless guy, loss of TIB, meanwhile still no sort/filter/search for inventory, and a buggy alpha patch that destroyed 240- gear from very recent special loot weekends where it messaged they wouldnt?  Just bad managent there.)

Steam did add some refund process, you might look into it.  But even though I'm disappointed they've taken a bad turn IMO I signed up for the ride, worst case scenario I see how it is at release and give up on it.  I hope they bring back the fun for tower and hero play.. they've added a lot of obstacles and took a step away from it.

The rules say that to be eligible for refund you must have purchased the game no more than 14 days ago and played it for no more than two hours.  I somewhat doubt the OP fulfils these criteria.

@basically everyone. it's not so much that they would be making it free to play. i knew that from the start that was their plan, even if i disagreed with it and wanted a one time pay game with free or micro transaction heroes/skin bundles like splatoon does.

i more don't like that originally the game was pretty good and worth the money for a pre-alpha. but with every update the game got worse, until now i don't even play it much after seeing the new feature. in fact i've gone back to DDE to play low leveled hour missions.

and yeah, i have way over that amount. upwards of 250hrs and had it since start. right now i'd take an older copy of the game over my current, like back when the spec points were the system.

Well, I would say there have been improvements and disappointments with each patch. However, this is why more players giving feedback might be just what this game needs.

Please let us know about this as well. Is this intended? What are you guys gonna do about it? I found it to be an utterly outrageous thing to do with the people who paid for the Collector's Edition exclusively for the gems and unique skins.

Seriously, either deal with the people who are getting stuff for free or compensate those who paid for that.

You should be happy for him. I would be happy if my friends got free stuff.

I bought if for supporting purposes and I thin it is important to tell Trendy as it may be somebody mixed up the codes and this could cause some financial loss because some people get unintended free gems.

In the end, the OP doesn't have any ground to stand on here.  Just as when you fund a kickstarter, there's no guarantee you'll like the end product, and that was made ABUNDANTLY clear on the steam page.

Good to know he's still opening MORE new troll threads to complain about how salty he is though.  One of these days a thread he starts will actually have a purpose towards improving the game, rather than ranting.... I hope.
