Which map themes do you want to see?

Recommended Posts

Some quick ideas I had:

- Ancient Egyptian or Desert/Oasis

Pyramids, mummified enemies, sand, desert trees/cactus etc.

- Snow/Ice

Frozen caverns, frozen lake, snow, pine trees.

- Jungle Temple

Mayan/Aztec designs, booby traps, jungle environment.

- Moon-base

High-tech environment, space-port encased in oxygen dome.

- King's Treasure Room or Dragon's Hoard

Treasure, riches, dragon?

- Research Facility

High-tech research facility, gadgets, robots, and high-tech machinery.

- High Security Vault

High-tech environment, clean and sophisticated, lasers, trip wires.

- Alchemist's Lab

A classic mad scientist's lair, filled with strange machinery, vials, and half-finished experiments, table with a half-mechanized ogre being built.

I think out-of-character environments, such as a high-tech research facility, would create amusing contrast with the current ye olde medieval theme.

What do you guys hope to see?

Aquatic/Undersea

A beautiful sunlit aquarium, or literally under-water with fish, coral, and a sunken ship.

Western (the rootin'-tootin' kind)

Western-film-style, wanted posters, saloons, horse and buggy.

I want a desert map, with tons of stuff! I will leave the design up to Trendy.

Sandstorms, height differences, quicksand and sand golems!

Death star setting... I mean um.

for real i'd love to see a more dungeon like setting, with cells and actual prisoner's.  Maybe the old man gets pulled over in a wagon driving under the influence of gold coins and gets tossed in ye old dungeon and it gets attacked! Good thing our heroes were there bailing him out already and were able to hold off the hordes!

An Oriental themed map, which could be the place where monks and initiates have been raised and trained.

You know I am.sure the power of the crystals could teleport our heroes into a stage where there is an actual day/night cycle. The monsters are stronger at night and during the day they are normal, the real test for our heroes is not knowing which wave will be the night cycle. Challenge accepted.

I think we're pimarily missing your classic very hot and very cold places.I'd love to see an environment trap dump enemies into a pool of lava or something.

What about a map based around battling ships? either water or sky sailing types. But the idea being the heroes are sailing towards some destination and are suddenly ambushed by multiple ships. the ships crash into each other damaging and making them now all entwined with each other and the heroes must defend their ship's engine (maybe another key component for multiple cores) as the mobs begin pouring out of the enemy vessels.

to play off someone else's suggestion perhaps a "stormy night" based map where defenses' effective attack range is actually reduced and the screen is visually darker so players have a tougher time seeing whats going on. with the occasional "lightning strike" lighting up the map for a brief time. heroes could be equipped with "torches" that can assist near by defenses "see" their normal attack range while the hero is standing near by them.

I bring no spoilers to this thread, only the same excitement you guys have for cool map themes.

Taking a page from things like Zelda and Magic the Gathering: Forest, Mountain, Island/Water, Swamp, Plains.

Would love to see more mountainous levels that work in the vertical direction more than horizontal.  Volcanoes are always great for mountainous areas as well.

Just for the sake of being overly ambitious and having crazy ideas:

  • Spherical Level.  Think something like Super Mario Galaxy where you can run straight and end up where you started.  Could add some cool mechanics about having more than one "world" with their own crystals.  Enemies knocked into the air fall down to the other planet and go attack that crystal.  Throw in some teleports that also link the two and you've got a really interesting map.

  • Boss level.  Taken straight from Shadow of the Colossus, the map is the boss.

  • Dynamically Generated level.  Core in the middle, random spawns, hills, paths, and maybe some occasional buildings and trees if you don't want a plain field.

  • Nostalgia level.  Throw in some kind of 8-bit Mario inspired level where enemies spawn from big green pipes, chests are ? blocks, and the world is infested with clouds that look suspiciously like the bushes.  If Borderlands and Dying Light can have those Easter eggs then we can too!

  • Five Nights (@ Trendy's) level.  Your defenses require power to operate, which is limited on this level.  When the power is gone, defenses stop working.

  • Spooky low-light level.  Map lighting is minimal or non-existent.  Heroes carry a light source (flashlight, candle, etc) so the player has limited visibility.  Lightning flashes occasionally illuminate the map for very brief periods.  Environmental "traps" could be something that lights up the lane for a short time.

  • Destructible Environment level.  This could go a few ways, so I'll further divide it.
    • Minecraft-esque where players can "dig" into walls/floors a bit so they can put in hidden towers or maybe connect 2 lanes so you can build a tower that hits both.  Perhaps something like the game Fracture (great game mechanics) which allows the player to also raise the terrain.
    • Tunneling enemies.  You start without seeing the spawn points and as the combat progresses, enemies will dig out their own paths to get to your crystal(s).  Environmental traps could be place-able explosives that cause their mines to cave in, forcing them to dig another path.  (This could be a very fun assault map, wink wink)
    • All AoE attacks deal damage to the Environment.  This level would be something like a floating platform over a deadly hazard.  As the heroes, towers, and enemies are battling, they are causing collateral damage to the floor/walls, resulting in holes that they could fall through.  These pitfalls would naturally occur where fighting happens most, so the threat is always relevant to the player.

There's some great ideas here.

How about a massive Ship pitching and rolling on the high seas?  Might be a little hard to run around the Ship, and watch out for the Kraken.

It would be cool if DD2 had big open world (like World of Warcraft) and lots of cool stuff (quests etc). I love setting and graphics. I am very sad because that game is only "tower defence", potential is very big.

I would like to see open worlds in almost all games but seriously, I think DD isn't compatible with open worlds.
