Dev Log 79: Power Surge Update on July 19th!

On July 19th, the Power Surge update releases on Steam and PlayStation 4! Tune into the Devstream Friday at 5PM EDT to see the update in action!

The Power Surge update includes:


  • The Power Surge Challenge

    • Storm’s a-brewin’ at Dragonfall Bazaar! While the storm rages, towers gain supercharged attack speed, instant upgrading and instant build time during Combat Phase, but the intensity causes towers to explode after a short time. Can you survive the storm?

  • Glaive of the Storms Monk Weapon 

    • Ride the lightning with the Glaive of the Storms! The alternate attack lifts the Monk into the air and lets him ride in style on his own personal cloud. With the power of the cloud, the Monk can synergize and maximize his damage output for peak fiscal performance.

    • Uhh, we mean, become a lightning god! His cloud corvette drenches enemies that walk underneath it and periodically strikes them with lightning.

    • The main attack unleashes a powerful lightning attack!

  • Mark 3 Costume for Series EV2

    • Remember the days of dressing up like a Bounty Hunter? EV2 remembers.

  • Balance Changes

    • This update brings additional balance changes, including an Earthshatter buff, Skeletal Ramster buff, Skeletal Archer nerf and a Poison Dart Tower nerf.

  • And more!

I had something pretty cool planned for this week’s Dev Log but then I forgot what it was… I’m focused on getting the Monk’s new legendary weapon ready and doing some balance changes to the Ramster, Archers, and the Poison Dart Tower. After that, I’ll be working on the Lavamancer primarily. Also working on the enemy changes and future hero balance whenever I can. The enemy changes are going to take awhile to complete, but I’ll have more to show you soon.

This week I'm having some great fun working on the new level, a wild west themed one this time!

At this moment we are currently world building the city, which means creating all the big stuff like the buildings, walkways, terrain and the small props such as windows and doors. We are trying to have a lot of player-only paths for this level so expect to be able to walk along rooftops, jump from one roof to another and snipe enemies from there!

Xenogenics posted a great thread on the forums about the state of the Official DD2 Wiki. In short, the wiki is wildly out of date and difficult to update. People are resorting to Google Docs to share information, which is just ridiculous.

So Ice and I are strapping up and diving in to fix the wiki. Our goal is to update the wiki with the most accurate information possible, make it easier for you to create edits and give you the tools to help keep it updated.

So... They are doing the one thing that they SWORE that they wouldn't do in this "balancing"...

Nerfing the AL Archers down. After of course most people have already bought them.  Lovely case of Bait and switch.

The revamp is coming, but it's going to take some time. Creating new enemy functionality and changing their spawning to a squad system is a pretty major change that we want to make sure we get right first.

Understand the concern, but trust me... He will still be well worth the purchase. He's just been too strong for far too long. Hoping EV2's T5 crit at T1 will be on the chopping block next.

And I say this as a person who has all 3 of the new characters, all of their spheres, and enough hours in this game to be ashamed of my lack of a life...

Its not a bait and switch, just balancing the game.

No, it's Bait and switch pure and simple.
 
When Abyss Lord Sales were at their peak they told us straight out that they were not going to nerf the AL but instead would bring the other characters "up to his level" .

Instead, all they did was wait for sales of the character to taper off before they nerfed him.

Dishonesty from a business should NOT be rewarded.

Would love to see something change to LSA sphere or Harbinger's Punch

I would love to see a change to LSA Sphere to make it more useful as well as the monk staff (Harbinger's Punch) to either stay the same if LSA gets buffed or be changed completely if LSA is not worth buffing due to future sphere overhalls pending.

If Harbinger's Punch simply worked with LA rather then LSA, and even if it gets nerfed into the ground due to the proc rate chance, it would still be worth farming and a nice way to top off a builder monk.

You lost many of your players in DDE because of nerfs. Do not repeat your mistakes, trendy. DD1 never been balanced, it has many supermega ridiculous enemies, uranium-powered pets, overpowered heroes, and this was the key to the success, not nerfs, mid-power heroes etc. Everytime you increased the power of items, heroes, pets, and this is the way of success not these nerfs, averaging etc...

My opinion. of course.

Nerf Away!  it's still in Alpha.  It's the time to to tweak the numbers and get the balancing right.  The game as it is... pretty ridiculous.

As for nerfing the Archers...  Nerf away!  Guys, what is the difference if all the hero's got a boost that put their towers past the archers, then raised the difficulty of the mobs?  Would you cry foul then?  Yea, so they did say they won't be nerfing the AL, but I for one am more than glad to hear they are going to...  'balance' things so the game will be more challenging.  

There is plenty of power in the core four heros right now to do almost AFK builds, without archers.  Even for the new players, TE put in guranteed drops in different maps to bridge the gear for NM4.

I don't want to put down towers and start dozing off (it is happening now).  I want to put down some towers and actively play!  And, I'm not talking about running around and pushing some buttons to match some silly colors...

No, it's not.

Some of us have been around since DD1 Beta.

The core issue here is the dishonesty.

Don't tell us that you plan to leave the AL alone and buff up the other characters and content to match him WHILE THE AL SALES ARE AT THEIR PEAK and then come back and nerf him anyway two months later after sales have dried up.

The fact that people are crying about the Archer nerf when it was 99.9% of what everyone did is laughable. Their DPS for a 40 DU tower was ridiculous and the only weakness they had was they had to have sight to sight in order to deal damage (arrows hit an object, it does 0) and it only hit 1 enemy outside of Explosive Arrows. It NEEDED this nerf, or a DU cost or attack cooldown increase.


If your strategy cannot adapt to the nerf, then either change it so it does (either use something else or get better positioning going) or you shouldn't be playing this game. Then again, this doesn't bother me and my friend because we both don't use AL builders and we use Oily Harpoons religiously (which is getting buffed next patch, so yay!)


On an off note, that Challenge sounds deliciously evil and I like it.

FInally some nerfs, the game become too easy, its boring to play on under-50 levels. Need difficylty increase a bit, but nerfs are alright too.

Honestly, any one who isn't agreeing with these nerfs might not have been playing the game correctly. The reason PDT and Archers are being nerfed is because currently they are pretty much the only thing you need. You can win a map with nothing but archers, or with one PDT per lane and that my friends, is obviously not how this game is suppose to be played.

Trendy is working around the clock to make this game balanced, filled with content, full of fun heroes and making all of those heroes carry the same weight during games. Even during the op elemental chaos mines we still had to use an apprentice for frosties, a monk for serenities and a squire for walls. Right now you just need 4 PDT's and your done (or just use all your DU for archers, press g and go for a shower)

Now it says nerf, it doesn't say will have 75% of its dmg taken away, it doesn't say attack cool down will be doubled, it just says nerf. 

Multiplayer games are constantly trying to balance themselves out with either buffs or nerfs, nothing interesting to see here, move along, all will be fine.


p.s All the above posts about lies and being framed buying heroes that will get nerfed right after and what not. Its not Trendies fault you fail to read what you are buying into, this is still an alpha, open for lots of changes. And no Alpha is not just an excuse, it actually means the bloody game isn't finished yet and will be changed. If you are bummed about that, or you think its taking to long  make a constructive post but for the love of god stop acting like a 7 year old that wants his cookie now!

"And more!" Will be interested in this.

PDT and Archer nerf? Why [[63962,users]] WHY?! Why change your minds? You are going to beef up the enemies before too long. So, what purpose does nerfing the 2 best AA towers in the game do? Please seriously reconsider!

Glaive of the Storms - I have been working in my DPS monk lately, even getting his the Storm gear. This new weapon will synergies perfectly. Just think, all lightning Monk in every way/shape/form! Including costume that is already available! This is exciting!


The new map.....I was hoping the Saloon was coming to Town. Oh well.... Figures it is a new map. I can't figure out what it is tho....

The rage is real O.o

I think the nerfs aren't that bad, just balancing the game a little bit and forcing the people to think how they are building.

I really do appreciate that, and it looks like I need to focus on DPSing the air once again (like in the old days of traps and frostys).

Hopefully Trendy give the Skyguard some love some time in the future :D

The major flaw in this "they made the game too easy" argument I'm seeing from snooty elitists is that the game at its core is too easy. Sorry guys, you've never been playing a challenging game. You've been playing a grindy frustrating gearcheck with inconsistent AI. Why do you think they're working on a massive strategic overhaul?


Aggressively nerfing any and everything players resort to that's effective is a very "no fun allowed" attitude that's incredibly spiteful to those of us without the time to rot away in Onslaught and have pages of optimised characters. 


The Abyss Lord was fun. Storm gloves were fun. Poison Darts became fun. Some of us spent the $20 on these elite classes because we buy gems to support the dev and their $50 a pop costumes only to now realize this is just a massive deception. Ev2 is next. Gun Witch as an underperformer, so she'll probably not get nerfed too much.

To all those leaving due to the nerf farewell, you won't be missed. If you don't understand why he was nerfed your part of the problem. You really can't say anything about the nerf destroying anything until it actually comes out. Yes any and all lies about not nerfing something then hitting with the nerf bat are bad. HOWEVER. Are you honestly and truly surprised that the "go to" tower that players use for both AA and covering two ground lanes is getting nerfed when it can hit 50k per shot x 2 archers or more in endgame? (those grind hungry gear hunting gamers). Poison tower needs to be fixed so it actually scales and not just upgrade to T2 and leave one for a whole lane. A "fun" game is not a game where less than half of the towers in game can be used effectively for defense. You know what its called when all you have to do is setup proton beams, archers and serenity auras to completely cover a map? Boring.As.F@&$. Yes, they do need someone who's better at balance changes and understanding how to set it all up as such. But you also HAVE to understand:

1) In army #'s they barely fill a squad of staff let alone a platoon of employees that could work hard on this.

2) It is an Alpha. Nothing you see at this point in time in the game is required to stay the same up until release.

3) If no one makes detailed suggestions or feedback forums on how exactly, in explicit detail, to balance something out, they are on they're own for figuring it out.

4) Whining like a school girl about how you don't like it or want it or its unfair, accomplishes absolutely nothing
