Daniel Haddad, Creative Director (Blacksmith)

Spending a good chunk of time on Loots and Stats revamp. Working with Steven Collins and Jeff Bickel to come up with new ways and new tools to make cooler and harder content. Also just started Witcher 3.

Danny Araya, Creative Director (DannyAraya)

Working on the script and doing some painting-style tests for the Intro. Also working with the team on some milestone planning!

Jay Twining, Senior Game Designer (TrendyJayT)

We’re jamming on the new party feature. Niel, Brys and I are focusing on providing streamlined and focused tools allowing you guys to play with your friends. In addition, I’m working on pets and pet ability distribution.

There’s been a lot of talk lately in the industry about intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors in game design. A lot of my thoughts and focuses are on identifying the intrinsically motivating activities, or activities which are rewarding in the practice of that activity. Identifying and polishing these mechanics is the most rewarding as a designer. Players tend to find the most enjoyment when participating in these activities. Things like combat, being social, expressing oneself, building (Minecraft, Terraria) and traversal are generally where players experience this bliss.

It’s things like map victory, hatching a pet egg or loot farming, which are extrinsically motivating and get a lot of industry attention. Participation in these activities is motivated by the reward. Collectors and achievers really like these kinds of systems. This is where the expression “carrot on a stick” comes from.

As we’re moving forward I find it exceptionally valuable to identify where we are lacking and effectively turn it up to 11.

In addition, I am prepping for a vacation next week. It’s been 4 years since I’ve had real vacation time with my fam. We’re really looking forward to disconnecting from “real life” and spending some great quality time together.

Chris James, Lead Level Designer (ceejeh)

The team is still focusing heavily on continuing to develop the next content release. Another map, another ‘big’ enemy, and more incursions. But when, oh when, will you get your heroes on it … muhahaha! Looking forward to diving into Witcher 3 this weekend once I have some time to really take it in. Also excited about Ekko in LoL - anything time travel is a tricky gameplay experience to take on.

Javier Barreto, Lead Software Programmer (javo)

Working on pet abilities while struggling with sleep deprivation. (“Welcome to parenthood” keeps popping up in my head.) I feel I’ve been stuck in meetings all through last week…. it’s time for coding!

A general note about game development: Finding the sweet spot between a general purpose implementation versus specific code for a feature always seems to be the biggest challenge for programmers. Do it fast now or take your time for thinking about general expansions (how will this system be extended; what can be shared or re-used). The best advice I can make for that is share your approach to a problem before coding. Talk, document and/or walk somebody else through your proposed solution. Communicate. Share. More often than not, simply talking a problem out will open the door to a better implementation.

Abraham Abdala, Lead Tech Animator (Broham)

Pets, more pets, legendary weapons, and future planning. Bug fixing, new costumes implementation, new relics, animation reviews, animation tools, and more!

Joshua Javaheri, Lead Tech Artist (javahawk)

Working on making the best experience possible!

Chris Flores, QA Lead (likethatwhenigothere)

Continue with planning for the next Milestone and continue to research a few lingering issues.

Jason Yu, Associate Producer (urfyness)

Hi, everyone. Thanks for having me on the Dev Blog. I’m the Associate Producer on the features team. I started as a QA tester in the infamous Activision “Dungeon” testing the multiplayer version of Call of Duty 2 and worked on multiple games while I was there. I then transitioned to Pandemic Studios and worked on The Saboteur as a Production Coordinator and took a break from the industry after the studio was shut down. I was fortunate enough to have found a home at Trendy where I get to work with some of the most creative and talented people I’ve ever met.

The last few weeks we’ve been very busy trying to nail down a plan for the next year, and we’ve still got a ways to go. This process usually involves a bunch of the leads sitting in a room together and pitching ideas on what we should focus on next. Much of my world involves validating schedules so we can actually hit our goals while not working excessive overtime. I don’t want to tease too much yet, but expect great things from us in the near future!

Lately, I’ve been playing mostly single player games like Witcher 2 & 3, Invisible, Inc., and Sid Meier’s Starships. For multiplayer games, I really dig League of Legends and Dungeon Defenders 2!

James Reid, Software Programmer (Driscan)

This week is focusing on implementing more of the next phases of pets. I’m also beginning work on some of the Onslaught UIs.

In my downtime, I picked up a couple of virtual console games for the Wii U. Grabbed Super Metroid...still one of my all-time favorite games. Can’t wait till a Wii U Metroid comes out. I’ve also begun taking a serious look at my health situation (I’m not sick or anything...I’ve just gained a bazillion pounds in the last couple of years). Who’da thunk sitting at your desk programming/playing video games 10+ hours a day would not be good for you? ;-) I picked up a Microsoft Band a couple of weeks ago, and the darn thing has actually helped motivate me to get active. Already noticing an improvement in my quality of sleep.

Adam Stow, Associate Producer (TE_Stow)

I’m going to go build a Mad Max level now. Like, right now. My god, best movie of the year. Otherwise, there’s a lot of planning going on right now as far as what our plans are -- more features, more polish, more stuff? What’s most important? I’m building individual scenario plans.

Jesus Diaz, World Builder (N3oDoc)

World building the hot springs level, adding snow piles everywhere and creating 3D assets such as grounds, walls….

Daniel Diaz, World Builder (DanielKaMi)

Polishing the hot springs level, building bridges, rocks and adding small details to the level. You guys should wrap up warmly, it's a bit chilly outside!

Dani Moore, Remote QA Manager (Dani)

Really excited to see some of the content coming down the pipes in future, even in its early state. We are helping a few projects get polished up in the quiet period between major DD2 content drops. Our RQA team grows each week!

Outside of RQA, finished Daredevil. And SHIELD. Read SW: Lords of the Sith. Playing Diablo 3 and Destiny. Awaiting on The Witcher 3 to arrive.

Philip Asher, Marketing Director (pmasher)

My comments have been really brief recently but basically… working on everything. Really confident the next couple of milestones are going to turn out great based on some meetings we had and now I get to do all the fun marketing planning… E3… PS4… yanno, fun stuff!

Josh Isom, Community Manager (iamisom)

My favorite threads this week:

  • Incursion Hard Drops: Spirit Essence with the double whammy this week! Spirit started a conversation about the kind of loot that should drop in Incursion Hard. What do you think?
  • Pet Food Probability: Gigazelle took the time to figure out the probability on pet food drops. Interesting data. Does this match what you’ve seen so far?
  • (Bonus) Skill Spheres: I don’t normally link to our own feedback threads, but the conversation happening in our Skill Spheres thread is fascinating. How do you feel about the Skill Spheres and the Ubers? Head on over and share your feedback!

I’m playing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze with my wife. It’s really darn good. If you have a Wii U, you should check it out. Also I’m doing this thing called “going outside.” Have you heard of it? I hadn’t. It’s intense. It’s all bright and *** in this outside place. I’m also playing basketball, which is apparently a real thing outside of NBA Jam. No fire, though, which is a shame. 3/10

Danny Araya, Creative Director (DannyAraya)

Intro Cinematic!

Jay Twining, Senior Game Designer (TrendyJayT)

It’s going to be a crazy week! I’m working with Niel on a fundamental change to the way Map Selection and the tavern work. I’m working with a super-talented group of UI Engineers, Animators and VFX guys to generate pet abilities. I’m working with another group of super-talented engineers to launch the next phase of pets, which includes abilities, passives, evolution and improvements to the Hatchery.

In addition, I’ve been bugging Abe to grab Terraria since we came back from PAX South, so many months ago. My intent is to start a large world from scratch and host a multiplayer server for Trendy folks. This will be super fun as Terraria is one of my all-time favorite games.

On a personal gaming note, I’ve finished my playthrough of Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor. Fantastic and super polished game. Very fun from a flow and exploration standpoint.

Chris James, Lead Level Designer (ceejeh)

The LD department has been focused on the new Onslaught gameplay mode, two new maps, and additional Incursions. Just heads down and working it like it’s worth it, because it is!

Javier Barreto, Lead Software Programmer (javo)

Working on pet evolution, bugs and support for the PS4 team (mostly maintaining, or trying to maintain, our branches up to date). Helping production define the scope for the incoming features and emergent work. We are cleaning up a bit making things easier to expand (and maintain) later on.

Abraham Abdala, Lead Tech Animator (Broham)

Rigging Tier 2 pets and new Huntress and Squire skins! Lots of pets meetings to get the pipeline down.

Joshua Javaheri, Lead Tech Artist (javahawk)

This week, we are working on some visual clarity issues and some VFX for pet evolution & abilities. The TA team is also working hard to further optimize the current media to further improve the end-user experience.

Chris Flores, QA Lead (likethatwhenigothere)

Finishing off MS14 and start work on MS15.

James Reid, Software Programmer (Driscan)

Meeeeeeeeeeetttttttttiiiiiiinnnnnnnggggggssss! It’s the start of a new milestone, so that means meetings, meetings, meetings. This week I’m working on fleshing out the rest of the Pet UIs.

Adam Stow, Associate Producer (@TE-Stow)

We got absolutely screwed this week in our Sentinels of the Multiverse game. Akash Butah managed to play 11 minions on turn 2. God bless deck-based RNG.

In other card-related news, there’s a big Magic office draft happening this week. Super excited.

But otherwise, we’re talking pet evolution, abilities and getting the next big thing (on your shoulder) deployed. ARE YOU READY FOR UBERGATO!?

Enrique Rivera, Concept Artist (3nrique)

Drawing lots and lots of neat little things for you guys. Pets, costumes, storyboards.

Jesus Diaz, World Builder (N3oDoc)

Working on a new hot springs level. This level will make you players feel like a ninja!

Daniel Diaz, World Builder (DanielKaMi)

We started to work on a new hot springs level! This is our first snowy level on Dungeon Defenders II!

Dani Moore, Remote QA Manager (Dani)

It’s quiet. Too quiet. We are in a quiet phase in-between major milestones. It gives us an opportunity to go through some things, look at how we handled the last milestone and plan to do things better.

Philip Asher, Marketing Director (pmasher)

Just got back from seeing Brand New in St. Augustine! Now focusing on PS4 plan and marketing plan for MIlestones 15-20. Lots of stuff coming and even more work to do. *focuses*

Josh Isom, Community Manager (iamisom)

Working with The Casters Guild on creating new DD2 entertainment for Twitch. Working with the Wiki team on page template and main page changes. Finalizing plans for website updates. Getting things ready for the Community Development Team to begin work on DD1 updates. Lots of behind-the-scenes work. I also finally found my Flickerwick, so my life is complete.

Here are my favorite threads from this week:

  • Public Game Etiquette: Lethargus started a conversation about proper and improper public game etiquette for DD2. What do you think? Is there something you feel is improper etiquette in the game?
  • Do You Want Players to Play The Game: evan999333 wrote about the divide between Hero and Defense DPS in the game. This has been a debate since the creation of the Defense Council. At various points in development, the community has spoke about the game leaning too heavily towards one or the other. How do you feel about the current balance?
  • The Kick System: Hethen shared his frustrations with the current kick system. How do you feel about the current implementation? What would you suggest to improve it?

I_PASS_BUTTER

The Caster Games are almost here! Each week from May 18 to the first week of June, The Casters Guild will come together and vie for supremacy. They will battle with the Old Ones all over Etheria, trying to score as many points as possible. At the end, one winner will be chosen, earning the right to face Trendy’s Champion in a head-to-head battle for glory!

The matches will be livestreamed, and the moderators of The Casters Guild will be the referees. They will add up points, and the caster with the most points at the end of the tournament will be the winner. Each week will feature a specific hero from the game to participate in the tourney. For example: The first week will focus on the Squire, the second week will focus on the Huntress, etc. Points will be calculated on what objectives are still standing, how many times a participant dies or loses a map, and whether or not they can continue on. More specifics will be given when The Caster Games begin next week.

Casters Guild member Kiraeyl has made a video announcing the start of the Games:

Who do you think will win? Sound off in the comments below! In the meantime, watch The Casters Guild prepare for the Games this week!

F.A.Q. and Clarification for "The Casters Games"

As there seems to be a good deal of questions (and complaints) surrounding the idea of the “Caster Games” and about teasing a tournament going forward, I figured it would be a good idea to write out our thoughts.

Now, on to the specifics. Let us give the synopsis again. The Casters Guild is going to compete in head-to-head competitions to get points to earn an informal title of champion, and get the opportunity to battle Trendy’s Champion.

  1. Each competitor will start a brand new, completely unused character (at level 1) and for two hours will work through a campaign at the level of their choosing (Hard or Normal). It is a solo campaign with only the one character. Both competitors will use the same character. If you are caught switching characters or using items from another character, you will be penalized.
  2. The competitor must continue through the campaign and not use either the forge or any of the Tavern components (Enchantments, spec nodes, or the marketplace).
  3. Any armor you acquire, you must either switch to it, or put it in your bags. You cannot use the forge to switch armor between rounds.
  4. There is no limit on the time it takes to make a build, but realize that the longer it takes to build, the less time to complete the level you will have.
  5. The competitors will start at the same time and work through the campaign for two (2) hours, and time will be called by the referee when it is completed.
  6. You cannot play the same level (if completed) more than once. If you die, you must play that level until you have successfully completed it. You only will get points when the level is completed.
  7. At the end of the two hours, the points will be tallied, and the competitor with the highest point total will be declared the winner.
  8. Each competitor will be ranked based on their point totals. Each week the points will be added until the final champion is declared. (At least four weeks after the start).
  9. The Casters Guild Champion will then take on the Trendy Champion using the same criteria and format above in a 2 hour battle to determine the ultimate bragging rights.

"The Casters Games" point system:

  • 5 points for completing a level on normal mode
  • 10 points for completing a level on hard mode
  • 5 points for every sub core that stays alive in the level. (If the two hours are up mid game, you will get credit for the sub-cores staying alive, but not points for the completion of the level)
  • 2 points = Competitor with the most XP at the end of the competition
  • 2 points = Competitor with the greatest amount of gold at the end of the competition (without selling items)
  • 2 points = Competitor with the most items all items
  • 2 points = Competitor with the highest item armored. (If the competitors have the same number of the highest, then they look at the number of the next lowest. For example, both have a legendary item, the winner is the one who has more of epic items being used. As well, this is based on what they are using, and NOT what is in their inventory)
  • 2 points = competitor with the fewest deaths. (Not level defeats, but fewest deaths)
  • -10 points = playing levels out of order.
  • -20 points = using more than one character, using the forge to sell items, using the tavern items, pets, or any other enhancement.
  • The Wild Card! The viewers have a say also on who gets additional points. Each week, after the competitions have been held, there will be a poll of the participants who did not win their respective competition. The participant who wins that poll will get an additional 15 points for their ranking as a “best effort” consolation prize.

Defenders, our first Beastmaster Contest has come to a close, but a new contest begins now. Our next Pet: Purrlin. Go find those magical little gatos, Defenders! You have until May 13th at 11:59 PM EDT to submit your Purrlins in this thread.

There was a lot of awesome participation for the Growld contest. Thank you to everyone that participated. We understand that getting Growld in the timeframe was a little difficult, and we are adjusting the rules accordingly. Starting with this contest, we will pick the top 3 pets as winners, and their owners will all receive the “Beastmaster” title.

Without further ado, the winners of the Growld Beastmaster contest are:

Thank you to our winners for being such good sports and a huge thank you to Mapatti for making handy-dandy charts! We love data! Winners, keep an eye on your PMs early next week for your title code.

For full contest rules, see the previous post.

Daniel Haddad, Creative Director (Blacksmith)

Working on Stats & Loot revamp and working with the rest of the design team on Onslaught and other new and cool things… Don’t listen to DannyAraya! he doesn’t have to be cryptic and vague! He lies!

Danny Araya, Creative Director (DannyAraya)

Working on story stuff! Sorry guys, I have to keep things cryptic and vague.

Jay Twining, Senior Game Designer (TrendyJayT)

Reviewing, collating and discussing all the feedbacks for map selection and parties.

Chris James, Lead Level Designer (ceejeh)

Now that the three adventure maps have been released into the wild, have been helping coordinating what we’ll be delivering for the next content release. Have jumped into some public games and played with random folk, and it’s been a pleasure to see everyone’s excitement :).

I’ve also been caught red-handed adding bacon into Javo’s post. Good thing he hasn't checked the last four dev logs. ;)

Javier Barreto, Lead Software Programmer (javo)

I’ve become the support guy it seems. And it all happened so casually. Part of me wants to go back in time and stop me the other part says no. I’m actually helping (or so I like to believe).

We shipped with bugs, and we know it. We are actively working on troubleshooting those bugs. It may take some time, but I’m confident we’ll get them solved, with a plate of bacon on my desk. (<- not me. Argentinians don’t eat as much bacon… I think the first time I tried bacon was here in the US.)

Another week starts … a new milestone begins. We are adding more and more on top of what we have so that you can enjoy some crazy combos with pets and ubers and … who knows … we are going crazy. We are also adding some verification steps to make sure our next delivery is less buggy; this means better defined processes, open communication and more verifications steps, which also means we will not be adding as many new features as we have had.

And last but not least, Michelle is doing great (crying and all, making her parents understand the value of a good night’s sleep, clean shirts, free hands … and silence). She is doing great. =)

Maggie, on the other hand, broke a leg… or .. toe (?) (I’m no veterinarian so for me it’s a toe). She’ll be fine in a month or so, for the time being she is not supposed to run or take long walks (something quite harsh for a pit… or young dogs in general). I’ll send a photo next time.

Thanks for your support,

Javo

Abraham Abdala, Lead Tech Animator (Broham)

Rigging pets and creating tools! Cleaning some animations for pets and Betsy.

Joshua Javaheri, Lead Tech Artist (javahawk)

We have a focus this week on delivering a solution for visual clarity during some of the more hectic moments players are experiencing. For example, WHY CAN’T I SEE WHICH TOWER TO UPGRADE! TOO MANY EXPLOSIONS HAPPENING!

Chris Flores, QA Lead (likethatwhenigothere)

Licking my wounds and trying to recover from the Update release. Start preparing and testing the Hotfix.

James Reid, Software Programmer (Driscan)

What day is it? Huh..what’s going on here? No work...must sleep zzzzzzz. Forealdo, cleaning up more Pets and Dragons bugs and then moving on to our next milestone tasks.

The wife is heading out of town today for the week. I see late night binging of video game playing happening in my near future.

Adam Stow, Associate Producer (@TE-Stow)

We hope that your enjoyment of Dungeon Defenders II, purchased at a normal or even low price, is more enjoyable and longer-tailed than that mess of a $99.95 pay-per-view boxing fight that happened this last weekend.

Trendy would like to remind you that if you want to have a boxing match with no hugging, you can check out ourold President's Day content. Okay, enough of the burns.

Enrique Rivera, Concept Artist (3nrique)

New Pet! I promise you will flippin* love it.

Jesus Diaz, World Builder (N3oDoc)

I’ve been doing some small fixes to previous levels as well as polishing a bit more of the tornado level. Can’t wait to start working on a new one. I hope you guys are enjoying the Pets & Dragons update!

Daniel Diaz, World Builder (DanielKaMi)

I've been working on the new canyon level adding some more details and also replacing some old content from one of our first levels with new fresh stuff! Can't wait to start working on a new level!

Dani Moore, Remote QA Manager (Dani)

Recruiting more folks into the RQArmy in preparation to fight the enemy known as the Hotfix.

Philip Asher, Marketing Director (pmasher)

Meetings, meetings, meetings. Actually typing this up now in one. Also getting ready to start planning the release of our next patch.

Josh Isom, Community Manager (iamisom)

I’m really excited to share that the original Dungeon Defenders is getting two more updates! I know our DD1 community has been dying for some new updates. Not only that, but it’s our plan to pass the torch to the community and give them the ability to update DD1. I can’t wait to see how the community takes DD1 into the future.

Back on DD2, our team is still hard at work fixing bugs and adding new content to the game. Our first Beastmaster Contest was a success, and we’ll be making tweaks to it for the remaining contests to make the RNG a bit more palatable. The next contest starts later today!

Here are my favorite threads this week:

  • Rewarding Gameplay: Bonzai101 discusses ways to improve how rewarding DD2 is to play. Do you agree with his thoughts? Do you have ideas of your own to improve the game?

I_PASS_BUTTER

Everyone in Etheria can find a new furry (scaly or creepy) companion, but only 6 of you can become a true Beastmaster.

For the next six weeks, search high and low to find the strongest pet in each class. Whoever wins that week will be awarded the exclusive in-game title of “Beastmaster."

3UmtSmC.jpg

This week, you’re looking for Growld! The person with the strongest Growld wins!

In order to participate, you must take a screenshot of the pet’s stats and post it in the comments along with a link to your Steam profile page. You are allowed to submit multiple entries during the course of the contest. At the end of the contest, we’ll verify who had the pet with the highest DPS. This person will be claimed the Beastmaster.

Any pet that has hatched since launch will be eligible for the contest, so keep all of the pets that you hatch -- it may help you win the next week’s contest. We’ll reveal the next contest next week!

If you win, you will not be eligible to participate in another Beastmaster contest in this series. Yes - only one of you can be the very best. I mean six. Six different of you.

This week’s contest begins now and runs until next Wednesday at 12 PM EDT. The winner will be selected and revealed at the bottom of the next contest post on Thursday.

Good luck!

Hotfix 4.1 Released

We've released a small hotfix this morning with the following fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where Victory chests for Liferoot Forest, Forest Crossroads, The Wyverns Den were only dropping powerful gear. So, if you were seeing powerful gear ALL of the time before, now you should see it slightly less than all of the time.
  • Fixed a bug where Betsy's health on her Incursions was too low. 10 million HP doesn't quite make up for all the OP gear she's dropping, but we'll be leaving those in for a little while. Have fun standing on your Defenses while it lasts!

New Known Issues:

  • Our in-game immediate messages system no longer works. We didn't figure this out until after the hotfix went live, because apparently we also don't know the date. Sorry for the surprise hotfix Defenders.
I_PASS_BUTTER

Pets & Dragons released yesterday, and with it came an avalanche of kind words, constructive criticism and bugs. We’re incredibly thankful for the support and feedback we’ve received so far, and with your help, we’ll continue to squash these bugs and improve the game.

Since many new faces are here, let me re-introduce the Dev Logs. Each week, we take a few minutes to discuss what we’re working on for the week. Additionally, some of us may also talk about some random things we’re doing outside of work. (I’m pretty sure most of us are either finished or almost finished watching Daredevil.)

Here’s what we’re working on this week:

Daniel Haddad, Creative Director (Blacksmith)

Kicking off the design team on our new goals and starting work on a large scale stats and loot revamp. Also squashing bugs… many bugs…

Danny Araya, Creative Director (DannyAraya)

Workin’ on storythings and arting stuff for some cinematics!

Jay Twining, Senior Game Designer (TrendyJayT)

Working on Matchmaking, pet evolution and pet abilities and passives. :D

We just released Pets & Dragons, which is totally awesome! I’ve been watching Twitch streams and reading forums!

Chris James, Lead Level Designer (ceejeh)

Hello, Etherians!

I hope are enjoying the new maps, Betsy, and the Incursions. A big shout-out to the entire team for their really hard work for bringing it all together. This is the first time on DD2 we have made a content release update like this, and we are very interested in your feedback. I have been watching some of the streamers and have both bouts of joy at the fun they’re having and anguish at the bugs that pop up - we will get there, and we’ll smooth everything out over the next few hotfix updates.

Thank you very much for being part of our fantastic community. The LD team is currently ramping up on what we will be creating for the next major content update and look forward to continuing to add more fantastic moments to the DD2 experience!

Javier Barreto, Lead Software Programmer (javo)

Cooling down today trying to regain strength to fix all the remaining bugs. It’s been tough and I’m really thankful for all the support I have had from our QA team, colleagues, family and friends.

We were way past the eleventh hour, exhausted to the point of crankiness, tears falling out our eyes (while babies crying in the back), and despite all that, we were bugfixing and troubleshooting the most weird s… things.

I hope you guys enjoy our latest build. A lot of heart has been poured onto it. We’ll be fixing/polishing it during this week so that the next things will feel even better… and then… we go crazy again.

Enjoy Bacon,

Javo

Abraham Abdala, Lead Tech Animator (Broham)

Cleaning and polishing accessories. Planning for new pets, weapons and costumes. Creating some tools for the team to work faster and more efficient.

Joshua Javaheri, Lead Tech Artist (javahawk)

Makin’ gains and makin’ games.

Chris Flores, QA Lead (likethatwhenigothere)

Prepping the fire hose to put out some fires. Getting ready to lose my mind over all the bugs.

James Reid, Software Programmer (Driscan)

For my birthday (the 27th), I want all of y'all to have uber amounts of fun playing the new patch. And please please please please do not string me up by my toes because of all the UI bugs. As Chris F said, we’re prepping the fire hose to put out all the fires. Our team really came together for this milestone and it was inspiring.

Also for my birthday I saw our PS4 demo at Best Buy! So it’s been a pretty awesome birthday week!

So for this week, a lot of the things y’all will notice that are borked regarding Pet UIs will be getting fixed.

Got a Wii U for my birthday with Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World. Will be playing that a good bit this week, now that I’ll have a little time to breathe. Also, got one more episode of Daredevil to go!

Adam Stow, Associate Producer (@TE-Stow)

Behold, Pets & Dragons. The source of my grey hairs (that isn’t PS4 related!). The fruits of our labor are now here, and as we attempt to get past this patch and the massive hurdle list, I try to distract myself with new releases in the rare event I get time to play these days. :)

Dungeons II is a really cool concept that unfortunately doesn’t work for me because i absolutely love the writing for the narrator. Taking the dungeon keeper brawl to the surface and changing into a bare-bones RTS for the overworld fights makes for a really weak level ending sequence. I wish there were more room/economy dependency chains though.

Time to go play DK again. :\

Enrique Rivera, Concept Artist (3nrique)

Creating new things for you, you, and you. I can’t wait to see all the new videos of people playing the new update.

Jesus Diaz, World Builder (N3oDoc)

Polishing the tornado level a bit more, focusing mostly on the background.

Daniel Diaz, World Builder (DanielKaMi)

As Jesus said, we are still focusing on the small details and polishing the background. Also I would like to mention something about this level. It has really dangerous jumps so be careful with this. We don't want you Defenders to fall off the edges!!

Dani Moore, Remote QA Manager (Dani)

I just want to thank my team for the extraordinary efforts, time and dedication in helping clean and polish up the recent Betsey patch. No rest for the wicked though. With Betsy finding her wings, we are saddling up again. With this battle fought and won, we eagerly march into another one.

Philip Asher, Marketing Director (pmasher)

Playing around with Betsy making funny videos. Actually… watching Twitch streams of DD2 and learning a lot about new player behavior. More importantly, prepping messaging about some bugs and fixes that will be coming in the next hotfix. I wish I could just tell all of you all of them right now, but first we all need to sync up on what they are and what the fixes are before we can write them all up!

Josh Isom, Community Manager (iamisom)

A special thanks to The Casters Guild for the incredible pre-release streams. Our office had a blast watching you tackle the new content -- and finding new bugs! Hopefully everyone else had as much fun watching as we did. We’d love to do this again for future updates.

I’m busy working with the mod team and the community team to gather up all of the feedback given to us since the Pets & Dragons release yesterday. We’re going to discuss some of it in the Devstream this Friday at 5PM EDT. I hope to see you there!

As always, here are my favorite forum threads this week:

  • Monster Token: MrCrave started a thread about the current price of the items in the Adventure Shop. We’re very interested in this feedback. How do you feel about the prices?
  • Old Skill Point System: Mythos created a thread to share his concerns about the Skill Spheres system, which sparked some very constructive feedback. How do you feel about the system? How does it compares to the old Spec Nodes system from before the update?
  • Acts of Bravery: I thought this was amazing. Kiraeyl is starting a challenge called the Acts of Bravery, where you take a hero and limit the amount of abilities and defenses you can use during a campaign run. She’s streaming the mayhem on her Twitch Channel.

Dev Log 20: April 22, 2015

Daniel Haddad, Creative Director (Blacksmith)

Wrapping up the sprint with everybody! Working super hard to squash bugs and make sure things are as good as they can possibly be before releasing this massive update to you guys. Coming April 28th to a Steam client near you.

Danny Araya, Creative Director (DannyAraya)

We’re almost there. You guys are gonna lose your minds when this patch is released!

Jay Twining, Senior Game Designer (TrendyJayT)

Sprint to the finish!

Chris James, Lead Level Designer (ceejeh)

We’re on the final stretch of polish and bug fixing before we get the new content out to you! It’s been a few fun few months working on this update. We’re both excited to hear what you think, and also looking forward to planning The Next Big Thing.

Javier Barreto, Lead Software Programmer (javo)

There’s an English proverb that goes, ”The longest mile is the last one.” (Or something like that.) I can remember a few occasions in my life on which it would hold true, and this will probably become one of them.

We are making our best to get this as polished as we can and stable; an update this big is no minor task to stabilize. I hope you guys enjoy the effort. =) And do I ever love bacon! Have I mentioned that already? I don’t think I have…

Abraham Abdala, Lead Tech Animator (Broham)

Bug fixing mode. Waiting for final audio, to render final cinematics. Getting ready for a lot of documentation for our pipelines.

Joshua Javaheri, Lead Tech Artist (javahawk)

Polishing the UIs. Working with our talented VFX Artist Joseph Joyal to complete this round of VFX for our new encounters, weapons and some really cool new special stats. It’s going to be an amazing update!

Chris Flores, QA Lead (likethatwhenigothere)

Trying to get fixed the last 2 or 3 billion bugs left before the update.

James Reid, Software Programmer (Driscan)

I’m not sure I have much more soul to give to this update. I’ve poured so much into it. We’re talking 16-18 hour days 6 days a week for the last couple of weeks. While we were encouraged to do some extra time, every one of us went above and beyond to make this the best possible patch we could. I have to give my fellow co-workers a huge pat on the back because they have kicked ass and taken names this update.

With that said, this week I’m trying to put the finishing touches on the Pet UIs and make sure everything works correctly. The QA department has been/will be my friend this week. (Those guys rock.)

I’m about halfway through Daredevil (not sure how I managed to find time to watch that much). I want to binge watch the rest of it! Sometimes when my code is compiling, I’ll slip a race or two of Mario Kart 7 in on my 3DS. Relevant comic. (Yes, I have the shirt of this.)

Adam Stow, Associate Producer (@TE-Stow)

Back in action after a lovely honeymoon abroad where we managed to get lost in St. Kitts and drink beers with locals. This week will largely be getting reacquainted with the current state of the patch and supporting it, while making sure we’ve got our ducks, skins and heroes in a row for the following content update’s schedule.

Enrique Rivera, Concept Artist (3nrique)

Working on some fun weapons designs...for the FUUuuUUTURE!!! Also, it’s been very inspiring to see the amount of love and hard worked poured on to this next patch by everyone in the studio. I really hope you guys like it!

Jesus Diaz, World Builder (N3oDoc)

Still working on the canyon level. Adding some final touches!

Daniel Diaz, World Builder (DanielKaMi)

Still working on the new canyon level. We’re focusing now on the small details and the OOB (out-of-bound areas).

Dani Moore, Remote QA Manager (Dani)

A war is fought one battle at a time. Each victory is a step closer to peace, each defeat a painful and costly lesson learned.

P.S. <3 Daredevil

Philip Asher, Marketing Director (pmasher)

So busy. This patch is going to be huge.

Josh Isom, Community Manager (iamisom)

Daniel Haddad, Creative Director (Blacksmith)

Dev Log - Entry 19 - 4/15/2015. Federation Space. Having survived two back-to-back Devstreams, I’ve now returned to my station. No one suspected a thing… Not even Trendy… Soon my plans will unfold and everyone will see what the Blacksmith was forging...

Danny Araya, Creative Director (DannyAraya)

Lots and lots of naming things. Preparing materials for the next Influence Vote. Lots of other miscellaneous things related to the patch. This next update is going to be insaaaanneee.

Jay Twining, Senior Game Designer (TrendyJayT)

I’ve been playing a lot of Dark Souls recently. Esorath has been hounding me for awhile to give it another go, so that’s what I’ve been doing in my spare time. Also ALL this milestone work! I cannot stress enough how awesome it is to be apart of a team that is this focused on your guy’s fun. We’re always talking about what would make the game better? What can we add that would make players feel more awesome?

Chris James, Lead Level Designer (ceejeh)

A short and sweet version for this week: We are all working very hard to get this content update to all of you.

Javier Barreto, Lead Software Programmer (javo)

I’m going to keep this short. We are and have been very busy (and personally not sleeping as good as I used to; parenthood). This week is about feature closure and polishing. Here’s a list on some of the things I’ve been working on:

Pet animations support

Pet replication issues

Pet firing support

Pet shop: in-world visuals

Bugs & crashes: adding this much stuff doesn't come without a number of these.

I hope we have a somewhat smooth week.

P.S. Today is my wedding anniversary and this is for her (not a baseball stadium … but maybe as popular?):

“Thanks, Linda, for everything you have given me: a beautiful daughter, love and support, patience and care, and last but not the least, faith in us. Game development is not like any other job. It requires a lot of passion and that goes with long nights behind a monitor. Thanks for not only allowing me that but encouraging me to follow my vocation. =)

Love you,

Javo”

P.P.S. I hope she reads this.

P.P.P.S. Linda is not the name of my wife. In Spanish, linda means pretty.

P.P.P.P.S. I love Canadian bacon.

Abraham Abdala, Lead Tech Animator (Broham)

Polishing anything related to Betsy. Helping Marketing with a bunch of renders, hero poses, videos and all the things. Starting bug fixing mode.

Joshua Javaheri, Lead Tech Artist (javahawk)

Dude, we’re making a video game!

Chris Flores, QA Lead (likethatwhenigothere)

What I said last week plus death by allergies.

James Reid, Software Programmer (Driscan)

Pouring uber amounts of love, sweat, and tears (and super late nights) into this next update. I’m still working on the Pet UIs, but OMG they are coming together nicely.

My five-year wedding anniversary was this past weekend. And I want y’all to know it was a quiet event since I’m pouring my life source into this update. So you know...you better enjoy this update. :-P Luckily, my wife is super cool and understands my passion for my career; however, next year...next year we’re gonna celebrate it right.

I picked up Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS with the spring sale Nintendo is doing, so that’s cool. I’ve played like 10 minutes of it because, you know, Pet UIs.

Update...just wanted to say update one more time…..update.

Adam Stow, Associate Producer (@TE-Stow)

Adam is currently on a boat, with his flippy-floppies.

Enrique Rivera, Concept Artist (3nrique)

Been working as a firefighting artist this week, putting out any art fires that burst up! And icons... endless amounts of icons. It was really cool seeing people get excited over the pets on the last devstream. Wait until you see their evolutions!

Also, Daredevil. It’s so good.

Jesus Diaz, World Builder (N3oDoc)

Working on the canyon level along with Daniel. Polishing all the grounds and rocks we made for the greybox. At this point, we’re almost done with that stuff so the next step will be to start adding the deco.

Also, so excited about the upcoming season of “Game of Thrones.”

Daniel Diaz, World Builder (DanielKaMi)

I'm still working along Jesus in our new canyon level. Last week we did all the blockouts, now we are polishing them to get close to our artist's concepts and soon we'll start to decorate the entire level! Stay tuned!.

Dani Moore, Remote QA Manager (Dani)

The fight against bugs has turned into an all-out war this week. Battles will be won and lost. Casualties will escalate. Veterans will be made, and survivors born. When the smoke clears, a final polished build will be left standing. A testament to our sacrifice.

Philip Asher, Marketing Director (pmasher)

Getting ready for the reveals on next week’s devstream. Ack, it’s even better than last week’s in my opinion. More patch stuff. Lots and lots of patch stuff. Also, Daredevil. It’s awesome, stop what you’re doing and go watch it. Unless you’re working on our next patch of course.

Josh Isom, Community Manager (iamisom)

Working with our team on something super secret that I’m beyond excited about. Helping the marketing team prepare for the next update. Getting the website ready for its next phase. Thanks to everyone for submitting feedback and suggestions about the website so far. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the next step, and we’ll continue to improve it with your help!

My favorite forum threads this week:

  • Item Growth -- Enhancer versus Crafter:  I’ve loved the discussion and heated debates happening on our latest Influence vote. At the moment, Enhancer is in the lead. There’s only one day left, so go vote!
  • [DD2 Giveaway] Character Concept Contest:  Ryster is hosting a giveaway a copy of DD2 to the person who can create the best character concept! On top of this, Sinistar is giving a Collector’s Edition code to the person who wins! Submit your ideas now -- the contest deadline is April 21st!

Finally, I’d like to say thanks to Syclic, Sinistar, TheBossAwesome, @Seraphin, OpticSpoonFaze, Gigazelle and Ryster for helping us move information from the Wikia to the new wiki. The wiki admins are working on aesthetics and information templating now. I should be able to share and promote the new wiki very soon once they give me the all-clear. It’s so much cleaner and easier to edit than the Wikia.

P.S. Daredevil. Go watch it.

Everything. All the things. SO MANY THINGS FOR THIS NEXT UPDATE. You guys, you have no idea how much I really want to be a ninja monk.

I started watching Bloodline on Netflix last week, and I’m finding it to be an adorable show about the true meaning of family and bonding with your loved ones.

Jay Twining, Senior Game Designer ([[67667,users]])

This week many ideas we’ve been discussing, planning and building towards over our development are coming together for everyone to see. This week, and weeks like it, are what I live for in game development. The chemistry of collective purpose is strong here at Trendy. This week’s version is tremendously focused and honed to a razor’s edge. We’re cutting through our deadlines in the Trendy way. Read it and weep bugs… we’re coming for ya!

To relax, I just finished Broadchurch and vowed to refer to time as a fraction then hour -- “Half 10” for 10:30. My wife was less than pleased… I’ve also started Sword Art Online, and given my MMO roots, I am tremendously engaged!

Chris James, Lead Level Designer ([[63955,users]])

Oh man, it’s been very busy for everyone! I’ve been working with many people getting the Tavern into a state that has so many changes that we’ve even decided to celebrate it a little! Once the update drops, be prepared to celebrate with us. :) That means seasonal… (gets garroted by marketing)

We’re also hard at work getting the new maps polished and ready for our Defenders!

Javier Barreto, Lead Software Programmer ([[72964,users]])

Game developer … and parent! In between short sleeping cycles and long development hours. I’m on a direct path to having daydreams. Based on previous experience: It should be fun. I can see myself surrounded by pets and goblins on an epic combat while managing towers with falling crystals…

My daughter is gaining weight while my wife and I are losing sleep. To whomever thinks Pitbulls are evil, you should see how Maggie behaves with Michelle. Nothin’ but love there. If you ever plan on having a baby, make sure you have a relative closeby. They make a world of difference. (Thanks Jane!)

Getting back to work after all this life events is proving to be quite challenging, but we are committed to this so we are doing it! Motivation is high and working hours are long. We are getting things done.

I would like to thank [[59357,users]] for his support on the profile wiping issue. We are still working on it, and I feel his help is leading us in the right direction. We are getting closer and closer.

Abraham Abdala, Lead Tech Animator ([[59787,users]])

Finalizing embellishments, Betsy animations and implementation and pushing hard getting the cinematics done. Hand-to-hand with QA getting any animation bugs out of the way.

Joshua Javaheri, Lead Tech Artist ([[23,users]])

ALL THE THINGS.

Chris Flores, QA Lead ([[59727,users]])

Everybody on the internal QA is pounding away on their assigned tasks, eagerly awaiting and jumping on new content as it arrives. The Taverns look….different... and festive! *looks at Chris James*

PPPPPPEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT UI. Lots and lots and lots and lots of Pet UI stuff.

Picked up Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin and played a whopping 5 minutes of it. Probably all I’ll get to play for the next oh...hmmm...3 weeks or so.

Adam Stow, Associate Producer (@TE-Stow)

Not a lot to report on in the present for production, but I’m proud to announce I’m getting married to the love of my life this Saturday. She won’t be reading this, but it felt like fate when she said on our first date that she was playing Dungeon Defenders, and I had this smug-ass grin on my face as I said, “Yeah, I’m a part of the team that makes that,” 4 years ago.

Enrique Rivera, Concept Artist ([[56240,users]])

Icons and illustrations for pets, skins, and new things...so many things...

Jesus Diaz, World Builder ([[39450,users]])

Working on a new level along with Daniel. At this point, we’re already done blocking out the entire level so we’re focusing on polishing the blocks now. It is worth mentioning that while I’m writing these lines, we were told to decorate the tavern for a special event!

Daniel Diaz, World Builder ([[33096,users]])

I've been blocking out (along Jesus) a new canyon level. We are done with the first iteration, and soon we'll start polishing this new baby. We are also adding new stuff in the tavern for a special event!

Dani Moore, Remote QA Manager ([[25251,users]])

Flying enemies crawling on the ground? A nasty wyvern flying at the speed of light? Holes in the tavern leading into the neverending void? We have a busy week ahead! The RQA group has grown since last week, so a special thanks to all of those that applied. We’re still open to new community members (18+), so feel free to get in touch.

Philip Asher, Marketing Director ([[14,users]])

Working on what pricing and rarity will be for all our fun cosmetic items. OMG. They are all so awesome. I can’t wait to play with them in the live game. Also, picked a name for the next patch. I think it’s the perfect name. Can’t wait to read what all of you think!

Josh Isom, Community Manager ([[4370,users]])

I want everyone to read the entries above. If you already did, read them again. Our team is working its collective ASS off getting this update ready. I’ve never been so proud of my Trendy family.

As for me, I’m still working with the wiki team to get the new wiki up and running. Right now, we need all hands on deck to help us move information from Wikia. If you’d like to help out, send me an email: josh.isom[at]trendyent[dot]com.

My favorite forum threads this week:

  • Kobolds Forced to Blow Themselves Up:  Speaking of Daily Missions, [[75574,users]] pointed out the sad portrait of the Kobold in the “Thinning the Ranks: Kobolds” mission, which led to an epic explanation by [[43252,users]]
  • One Word to Describe Your DD2 Experience:  One Word to Describe Your DD2 Experience: [[77371,users]] wants to know: What one word describes your DD2 experience? [[41380,users]] has my favorite answer so far, but I want to hear yours!
I read “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “The Hound of the Baskervilles” (a Sherlock Holmes novel) last week. This week, I’m reading “A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K. Le Guin. It’s amazing so far. If I have a son, I shall name him Atlas Sparrowhawk Isom.
